Space Communications Presenter


Part-Time - weekends


We are looking to recruit Space Communications Presenters to present science through public programmes activities to the National Space Centre’s various audiences, delivering our live public programmes activities for families, groups, and adult visitors daily, especially on weekends and during school holidays.


The successful candidate will have a good knowledge of science, astronomy and space and excellent communications skills (including confidence when presenting to a live audience). A degree in a science subject is desirable.


Working with Children – An Enhanced DBS Disclosure is required for this role.


Starting salary £12.11 per hour.


Part -time - 14 hours per fortnight, alternate weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) plus additional shifts during peak periods. Additional hours worked will be compensated at standard hourly rate.


Please note that this role is permanent (subject to successful completion of probationary period) and not suitable for temporary or holiday only working.

Job Title

Space Communications Presenter


Reports to

Education and Space Communications Manager.


Overall Purpose

To present science through public programmes activities to the National Space Centre’s various audiences, to enhance the visitor experience, and to increase the knowledge and awareness of space-related phenomenon and news.


Main Tasks

To engage and inspire National Space Centre visitors about science.

50% of the role will be to 'act' as cosmic flight host in Tetrastar space port mission experience. Information on the experience can be found here:

To communicate and interpret space news and information to visitors within the galleries.

To interpret the astronomy and science content displayed within the galleries to visitors, showing how space is a gateway to all the different sciences.

To present live programmes (including but not limited to science demonstrations, talks, tours and presenter-led planetarium shows) daily to visitors as ambassadors of science.

To present outreach activities at events and venues off-site as deemed appropriate.

To act as fire warden in designated areas.

To proactively provide general information and guidance to all visitors to ensure their experience is enjoyable, safe, and of the highest standard.

To write blogs when required

To present tours in the ‘mission space’ gallery.

Other reasonable tasks as may be designated.


Training Provided

Work with other departments including the Education and Operations teams to gain experience in science communication, public outreach, and customer care.

Undertake other in-house training as necessary.


Hours

14 hours per fortnight including alternate weekend shifts. Additional hours worked will be compensated with time off in lieu.


Workplace

National Space Centre with occasional travelling off-site as required.


Person Specification

Essential

A knowledge of science, astronomy, and space.

Willingness to learn scripts and act out role as cosmic flight host

Passionate about communicating space-related news and information.

Excellent communication skills, including confidence when presenting to a live audience.

Ability to produce factually accurate work, suitable for a range of audiences.

Ability to work autonomously and as a member of a team.

Ability to prioritise busy and varied workload and take initiative.

Experience of working face-to-face with members of the public

Desirable

Degree in a science subject.

Experience communicating science with the public.

Good knowledge of British space flight history, and current space missions.

Full driving licence.
