Sound and Lighting Technician

Grade W1 £10.52 per hour - Zero hours contract

Are you interested in the operational side of events? Do you want to be part of the backstage action of our club nights and live gigs?

We are seeking an enthusiastic student to join us as a Sound and Lighting Technician to join our entertainments team to help run our event programme in Asylum and Sanctuary Bar.

If you will be a student at University of Hull for the 2023/24 academic year then you are an ideal candidate for this role.

About the Role

The role will involve working closely with the AV/IT Technician in managing the events within the venues and having sole responsibility for the delivery of the sound and lighting for them. Key responsibilities include:


  • Manage the set-up of technical equipment including responsibility for PA, lighting of all Hull University Student Union events from Bongos Bingo, Live Music, to general club nights like Tower and society performances
  • Support the management team or subcontractors running the technical elements of a show
  • To help cost, book and plan use of technical equipment within the Union.
  • Deliver excellent customer service and customer management, at all times
  • To keep the stage and backstage are clean and tidy and in accordance with Health and Safety guidelines
  • Assisting with room set ups, which may involve some heavy lifting.

Reports to: Entertainments Manager

About You

To excel in this role, you will have the drive and ambition to succeed and have sound knowledge and experience within the vent industry as follows:

  • Lighting, sound and power
  • Lighting control and systems
  • Good IT skills
  • Confidence to liaise with production teams and students.

  • Ability to work at heights when required
  • Ability to lift heavy objects safely when required
  • Must be flexible to work weeknights and weekends
