Solvent Distribution & Utilities Technician
The role involves delivering the below 2 key aspects in a safe and compliant manner:
- Monitoring and control of compact Site Utilities (steam, water systems, nitrogen, compressed air, chilling & cooling systems and waste streams, solvent distribution, solvent disposal LBOD effluent systems.
- Providing EHS Services to the site - Lead Emergency Response Team member and supporting Class I Permit to Work (PTW) system for the area.
The role operates on a 5 shift 12-hour shift pattern working nights and day shifts reporting to the Solvent Distribution & Utilities Lead with no direct supervision out of hours. Duty manager will provide support out of hours.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the safe uninterrupted supply of utilities & solvent services to meet site demand supplied at the required quality, monitoring and recording plant running parameters, responding to alarms, carrying out line side problem-solving and escalation of plant, process and people issues and undertaking minor engineering tasks.
- Lead ERT responsible for the ERT team during an incident, undertakes “Dynamic Risk Assessments” to identify the hazards & evaluate risks before determining the most appropriate response to the specific incident based on existing procedures & the teams experience. Note: The Duty Manager has overall responsibility of an incident.
- Responsible for PTW (Class 1) carrying out plant preparation and isolations for maintenance work in accordance with the site PTW system.
- Responsible for ensuring correct use and completion of batch log sheets in accordance with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP).
- Responsible for administrative tasks including but not limited to use of CDMS, completing unexpected condition forms (UCF’s) archiving area documentation, accurate completion of electronic time sheets.
- Responsible for carrying out inventory and maintaining stock levels in line with minimum re-order quantities.
- Responsible for acting as a contact to support departments to facilitate continuity of the services and solvent.
- Responsibility for the work area maintaining good housekeeping standards and ensuring safety, quality, compliance and carrying out plant tours, completion of shift logs and effective handovers at specified times.
- Responsible for supporting HAZOPs, HAZIDs, inspections, LSOP’s up-versions, area projects and completing Level 1 audits.
- Responsible for prioritising work, in an unlikely scenario of unplanned reduced team size, to complete essential activities of the role for the continuation of vital Site activities.

- Expected to be competent in the role typically in 6 – 12 months
- General
- Basic IT skills, excellent literacy and communication skills
- The ability to plan and prioritise workload and work with a small team or independently
- A high level of awareness of EHS requirements including the ability to identify hazards and eliminate risks
- Active member of the ERT and expected to attend the relative training
- Attending safety & quality committee meetings and inspections as a departmental representative
- Ensure compliance with cGMP requirements

Awareness and compliance with relevant procedures including but not limited to the following:
- Fire safety, first aid, spillage, accident and incident procedures
- Site and area PPE/RPE requirements including use and maintenance of equipment
- Manual Handling, Risk Assessment & COSHH requirements
- Awareness of PCCE and raising and closing of ZAP’s, ZIPs and level 1 audit actions
- Executing all aspects of the site Permit to Work Class 1 procedure
- Awareness and application of all the GSK Values and Expectations
- Expected to adapt to technological advances to remain competent with new plant and processes
- Expected to attend training and train others in line with myLearning curricula and associated role specific development programmes within a defined period
- Requirement to work indoors or outdoors, at heights using vertical ladders
- Capable of carrying out work with a medium to heavy physical nature.

ZSC Divestment
The ZSC Business has been sold to an external company. It is GSK’s proposal to close its ZSC manufacturing operations once the technology transfer to the buyer is complete and the Manufacturing and Supply Agreement has come to an end. At this time, and in the absence of any other alternative, GSK would be proposing to close the ZSC sites. GSK would explore all options for retraining, supporting employees who might be at the risk of redundancy.
