IT Technical Solutions Engineer

Summary

Responsible for ensuring the sustainable and reliable execution of new and existing technology platforms. The IT Technical Solutions Engineer implements new technologies to manage device security, cloud-based services, virtual infrastructure, and applications. This position acts as a technical bridge between internal department teams and vendor partners for development, engineering, service delivery, operations, and support.

Distinguishing Career Features

A. The IT, Technical Solutions Engineer is a senior-level professional position that integrates advanced concepts governing new technology initiatives and platforms.

B. This classification will also support virtualization projects, including the implementation of and development of the IT virtualization environment and hybrid cloud offerings for the College and District sites.

C. Advancement along this ladder can occur through mastery with end point devices, cloud computing, server administration and system databases.

D. IT Technical Solutions Engineer will have the capability to be a project leader and advanced subject matter expert for software availability management, server integration(virtual and physical), cloud computing, and mobile devices management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The IT, Technical Solutions Engineer is responsible for performing a variety of technical tasks for Infrastructure and Operations relating to Device Management, Server Management & Migration, Data Center Operations, and Cloud Environments.

Specific duties may vary among projects. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all the following kinds of duties, as assigned:

  • Engineering and operational responsibility for the hardware, software, and systems managed by the Information Technology Services team, which includes operating systems, email, anti?virus, Active Directory, M365 cloud services, and backup/recovery solutions.
  • Design, develop and engineer technical solutions to facilitate new device platform implementations, device roll outs, system updates, and version migrations.
  • Builds, scales, and secures our on?premises and cloud services using automation tools such as Azure ARC, Alerts, PowerShell, and Monitor.
  • Works as a subject matter expert in the following key areas: Office 365/Azure, Active Directory, Exchange/Exchange Online, Power Platform Governance, VMware products.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and communicates architecture and integration options; makes recommendations to management and documents best practices.
  • Provides solutions and inputs into the design of configuration data required to manage and track end point devices, infrastructure and applications effectively; analyzes current technologies and develops steps and processes to improve and/or adapt for future needs.
  • Responsible for the technical management of software, updates, and tools that continually improve performance and resolve persistent issues.
  • Acts as technical lead and key resource to gather, analyze, and evaluate technical requirements and transform them into cloud-based solutions.
  • Leads on various projects from design to implementation.
  • Assigns team members to various project associated tasks.
  • Maintains updated task list and project timelines.
  • Creates project milestones and objectives.
  • Works closely with user support, faculty and staff to ensure implementation meets design and requirements; acts as liaison between internal department teams and vendors.
  • May assist other department engineers in creating practical demonstrations of proposed solutions and demonstrating them to other members of the team.
  • Provides post project implementation technical assistance to managers, faculty, staff, or students.
  • Maintains service agreements with vendors; communicates with vendors to provide quotes and scope of work for cost analysis.
  • Evaluates engineering blueprints and diagrams; provides feedback to construction personnel.
  • Documents best practices for new services and applications.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

  • Extensive knowledge in networking and security concepts, methods and technologies in large scale, production cloud and hybrid environments. Education and Experience

This is a permanent, general funded, full-time, 12-months per year classified position. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends, if necessary, to meet the department's needs. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.

Classified, contract staff earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Classified Management and Administrators earn 22 days vacation per year.

Holidays
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Great Expectations
Pension Plans
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan  is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
