Chief Technology Office
The Chief Technology Office (CTO) maintains a centre of excellence for technology and broader infrastructure-related innovation, translating market needs into core expansion programmes to enable market development. We ensure that products and services are constantly pushing the boundaries of satellite communications. The CTO team is responsible for delivering development programmes, including satellites and launchers, ground infrastructure (ground stations, networks, user terminals and access technology), regulatory, market access and product and service development.
The CTO Platform Architecture Team owns the end-to-end architecture and technology strategy for Inmarsat's software platforms, products and services.
The primary purpose of this role is to define the technical requirements and high-level architecture of Inmarsat’s software products to meet customer demands, as well as working on infrastructure projects and technology innovations that lay the foundations for Inmarsat’s technology roadmap.
The architecture team is responsible for describing the solution to technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring that solutions are fit for purpose, cost-effective, deliverable, operable and supportable.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work across a diverse set of technology domains, such as mobile edge devices, software-defined networks, hybrid cloud, data platforms, analytics and monitoring, API design, applications and services.
The role requires broad technical expertise with an emphasis on software architecture and cloud-native design. It offers a tremendous opportunity to learn from a wide range of customers, subject matter experts, technologies and projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Working with internal stakeholders to ensure technical solutions meet business requirements
- Translation of business requirements into technical requirements, high-level architecture, and design documentation
- Ensuring that solutions are secure, reusable and cost-effective from both a commercial and operational perspective
- Identification of risks, issues and dependencies
- Collaborating with software engineering teams to help decompose high-level architecture into work packages, guiding the specification and implementation for all aspects of the software architecture.
- Validating low-level designs against high-level architecture and requirements.
- Contributing to the architecture roadmap for Inmarsat’s products and infrastructure
- Providing technical expertise and advice to internal stakeholders
- Identifying new and emerging industry trends that should be evaluated and incorporated into the company’s strategy
Essential Knowledge and Skills:
- Bachelor or Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field
- Experience as an architect, leading the design, development and deployment of end-to-end software at scale
- Software engineering experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to convey complex subjects in clear language
- Thorough grasp of systems thinking and the ability to understand, interpret and adopt new technical information rapidly
- Ability to think holistically, with an appreciation of operational complexity, security and systems management.
- Interest in new technologies and innovation, and a practical understanding of the technology development lifecycle
- Excellent organisational and time management skills
- Strong sense of responsibility and ownership for the success of projects
- Familiarity with modern design patterns and frameworks
- Creative problem-solving and analytical skills
- Proven ability to think strategically about product and technology challenges
Desirable:
- Certification or hands-on experience in one of more cloud environments
- Knowledge and first-hand experience of networking protocols and routing
- Experience with software virtualisation including containers and orchestration (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes)
- Familiarity with Linux and hypervisors
- Experience of working in an Agile development environment, DevOps.
- Cybersecurity and secure-by-design methodology
- Familiarity with microservice and service-oriented architecture
- Familiarity with one or more database technologies and data modelling
- Data and event-driven design, domain-driven architecture
- Familiarity and hands-on experience in API best practices and management platforms
