Job description
Note: This role can be based from any of our offices or remotely within the UK.
We're making zero carbon happen
We're OVO Group, a big family of companies united by a single vision: to get to zero carbon, fast.
We call this Plan Zero – and it shows how we'll be fighting the climate crisis and transforming the way people use energy over the next decade. To do this, we need the sharpest minds. Are you up for the challenge?
Do great green things with OVO Energy
So much has changed since we launched in 2009. Our goal remains the same though: make energy cheaper, greener, and simpler. Just as it was on day one.
Everyone belongs at OVO
Our aim is to build a diverse and inclusive movement: teams of brilliant people, with unique talents, skills, passions, and experiences.
We encourage everyone to join us, whatever your gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, life experience, or background. So please come as you are – we can't wait to meet you.
Where in the world of OVO will I be working?
OVO is a highly data-driven organisation, with an ever growing demand for excellent quality, reliable and accurate data to power decision making in various parts of the business, for example:
- Enabling our product teams to work out the best way to serve our members in a highly regulated and competitive market;
- Allowing our Data Science teams to build tools and models to help members reduce their carbon impact by analysing their 10 second smart meter data;
- Helping our Leadership team prioritise how we integrate our Group companies and rationalise our organisational and technical architectures.
To support these use cases, and many more, we need to be able to empower the organisation with a cutting edge Data Platform. You will work as part of a growing set of teams focused on building this platform, providing the rest of the business with the tools, services and data they need, at the speed they need it
What will I be doing?
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing, building and maintaining a cutting edge Data Platform based on streaming technologies.
- Developing tooling that helps other parts of the business use the Data Platform, including tools that help users find and access the data they need, understand the lineage of data, as well as developing self-serve tooling that helps users to publish to and consume from the platform.
- Working in an agile software engineering team where you will have the opportunity to Influence technology selection.
- Helping to establish good engineering processes within the team including: using infrastructure as code; contributing to automated testing efforts; utilising monitoring and alerting tools; and employing CI/CD best practices to deploy regularly to production.
Is this job for me?
Ideally you will have:
- Experience working on streaming ETL solutions utilising streaming data processing tools (e.g. Kafka Streams, Amazon Kinesis or similar).
- Proven ability to assist in the design, technology selection, implementation and testing of software.
- Excellent knowledge of programming languages e.g. Scala, Python, Java and/or SQL.
- Experience developing cloud-based solutions on GCP, AWS or Azure using Infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform.
- A proven track record of designing, building, monitoring and managing large-scale data products, pipelines, tooling and platforms.
- A solid knowledge of data engineering principles such as Data Modelling, Data Warehouses, Data Lakes, Data Marts and ETL.
- You will be comfortable working in an agile software development environment with regular release cycles, and have experience of pair programming, BDD/TDD, CI/CD and deployment strategies.
