Job title: Software Engineer
Location: Edinburgh, London, Bristol, Lisbon (including hybrid)
Part time available? Yes up to 80%
Salary: £50,000 - £89,000
Kaluza wants to power a world where net-zero is within everyone's reach, by building the platform that will accelerate a sustainable, affordable and resilient energy transition. It's a huge challenge, but often the toughest problems are the most rewarding to solve.
Since launching in 2019, Kaluza's technology has been empowering some of the biggest energy suppliers to better serve millions of customers.
From revolutionising billing to smart electric vehicle charging, our real-time cloud platforms transform supplier operations, reducing cost to serve and boosting engagement. And most importantly, they enable suppliers' customers to drive decarbonisation with smart, low carbon technologies.
Where in the world of Kaluza will I be working?
You'll be joining the Kaluza Technology community. We're a diverse group of both data-led and product-focused engineers, pushing the boundaries of technology and working at an extraordinary scale. We strive for engineering quality & innovation, continuously improving our best practices across our highly collaborative community.
More specifically, you'll be working on the Kaluza's Energy Retail platform. This is a SaaS technology platform that aims to revolutionise the operating platforms for energy retailers globally. This platform has been built with scale and technical quality in mind and is the foundation for decarbonisation efforts by Kaluza's customers.
You'll be joining as an engineer in the Billing area, for the Balance and Ledger (BAL) team. BAL has a strong remote-first ethos - they run all team ceremonies and engineering pairing sessions virtually, and aim to be as flexible as possible to balance work with life. Team members can choose how and where to work, whether it's from one of our lovely offices or from home or a mixture of both. Every 4-6 weeks we do like to get together as a team for workshops, discussion and some socialising; for meet-ups that are not held at your local office we can cover the costs of travel and accommodation if necessary.
What will I be doing?
BAL builds, tests, deploys and supports a range of services for use across the Billing platform. We don't expect you to arrive with experience of all of them, but you can expect to learn about and get hands-on with many, in particular Scala, Kafka, CircleCI, GitHub Actions, Terraform, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, AWS, GCP and DataDog. As a team, we currently follow a Kanban approach to Agile development, making use of tools like Miro, Confluence, Jira and Trello for workshops, documentation, task management, etc.
You'll be involved in the full lifecycle from rapid prototyping to helping us scope our work and backlog refinement to developing, configuring and deploying services, to monitoring and improving our operational health. You will join our support rota to triage platform issues and respond to incidents. Kaluza itself has a great learning culture and as an engineer in BAL you can also expect to dedicate some of your time to active learning and development.
In the Billing space we have several interesting challenges that you would help solve including:
- How to abstract and reduce complexity across multiple clients and countries
- Scale systems to process millions of data points through complex processes
- Build extensible systems that allow for customizability
We are only part way through this journey and there are lots of challenges still to be solved!
Is this the job for me?
You're the right person for us if:
- You are genuinely passionate about developing products that will positively impact millions of people and also our environment
- You love working in teams and collaboratively building features that impact customers
- You are motivated by owning products, from inception to continuous improvement
- You believe strongly in test automation, continuous delivery and working with best agile practices
- You love building scalable, resilient and observable solutions
- You seek learning opportunities to deepen your expertise or broaden your knowledge
What experience you'll need:
- You're an experienced hands-on engineer with expertise in Scala or another JVM language - if your experience doesn't match our stack exactly then don't worry, we hire based on software engineering talent, not language-specific skillset.
- You have built or contributed to a variety of systems, ideally in different technologies
- Knowledge of the best engineering practices and continuous delivery
- You have experience building highly performant applications
We're on a mission, We build together, We're inclusive, We get it done, We communicate with purpose.
Our values are not words on a wall — they are at the heart of our culture. They are how we make decisions and how we treat each other. They are concrete and clear, and reflect what we as people, and as a business, really care about.
