The University of Southampton is currently undertaking numerous upgrades and improvements to our online presence. An opportunity has arisen to join the development team to support this change and the continuous improvement of our varied platforms.
About the role:
We are looking for a Software Engineer who will show their initiative and resourcefulness as part of a small team to develop, support and maintain our online presence.
This is an exciting time to join the team as we are about to start a wide range of projects including upgrades and changes across a diverse range of platforms to enhance our online estate. This role will give the successful candidate the opportunity to work on many different languages, systems, and applications, working with teams across the organisation.
This role will report to the Communication Platforms Team manager.
What you will do:
- Work across the full stack as part of a small team, along with our communications department, developing the newest version of our website
- Develop, maintain, and improve the other varied systems which make up our web estate to ensure we continue to have a reliable web presence
- Liaise with the Senior Software Engineer to define and understand the work required.
- Work with teams across the organisation to understand user requirements and help shape these into solutions
- Develop code and systems to a high-quality including documentation and automated tests
- Share your ideas for ways to improve and continue to extract more value from our web estate
Experience you will bring:
- Developing applications in PHP, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS as well as a willingness to develop in other languages
- PHP and JavaScript build and testing frameworks
- Drupal or WordPress. If not, experience of another CMS and the enthusiasm to learn them
- Linux system administration
- Developing to WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2.1 AA and an understanding of its importance
