Job Introduction

Within the emerging products team at Reach PLC, we are constantly striving to innovate and looking to disrupt the publishing industry. Five years ago, we created an innovation team to produce new products for the business. During this process, we built a product called InYourArea (IYA), which is now the UK’s leading local news and information platform and is connecting communities across the full-breadth of the country.

The Junior Fullstack Engineer will work within the IYA Team to help improve the user experience and performance of the IYA experience. Reporting to one of the Emerging Products Team Engineering Managers, you will be working alongside a small team of other engineers in the 30-strong Emerging Products team.

Role Location

This role can be based remotely from home, and we are therefore open to candidates based across the UK. We are also able to accommodate a hybrid working pattern if that is your preference from one of our Hubs across the UK.

So, who are we?

We are Reach PLC, you might not have heard of us but we have probably met without you even realising it. We are home to the UK and Ireland’s most iconic digital platforms, magazines and newspapers. From the Mirror, Daily Express and OK!, to our regional titles such as the Liverpool Echo, BirminghamLive and the Manchester Evening News (plus lots more), our brands and the stories we cover are as varied as our people. We help all kinds of people share experiences through our stories because we believe this is what makes us human.

Oh, and we should probably also mention that with a monthly readership of 47 million people, Reach is the largest commercial publisher in the UK. At Reach, not only will you feel better understood, you will also feel you understand other people better too.

Key Responsibilities

You will be a Junior Fullstack Engineer helping to maintain and evolve our core product, InYourArea.

You will be responsible for maintaining and developing the code across the product, developing in a test driven manner, maximising accessibility and prioritising performance.

The successful candidate should have a blend of UI and API based skills!

Our frontend is built using React, and so the successful candidate should have some understanding of how to build successful applications with React using modern frontend best practices.

The first project you will be involved in will depend on the successful candidate. We are currently looking to make substantial updates to our core IYA web product - both the website itself and the APIs that power it - with the skillset and career wants of the successful candidate likely impacting where we see them working.

The Ideal Candidate

A solid understanding of how UIs consume API would be nice to have, since a lot of our products will be consumed by web and mobile clients.

We use AWS for infrastructure, experience here would be a plus since it's used extensively. Other infrastructure experience is otherwise likely very relevant!

Package Description

What can we offer you?
