We have roles available for Senior Software Engineers and Software Engineers to join multidisciplinary agile teams within the department.

You'll collaborate with analysts, architects and engineers to design and build software products that are more efficient, accessible, and available for all of our users.

You will assist in the design of software products and infrastructure that make up our services in collaboration with architects and senior engineers.

With a focus on operational stability, robustness, resilience, availability and quality you will be accountable for the code your teams produce.

As a Software Engineer your responsibilities will include but are not restricted to, the following:

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary agile team responsible for turning concepts into production-ready services.
  • Responsible for building performant systems that can handle large traffic, data processing pipelines and large data sets.
  • Write, share and review quality test-driven code, using modern frameworks and development techniques.
  • Responsible for integrating with other services and data sources, working with cross-functional teams to ensure services are built to high standards.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the implementation of services/solutions is adhered to approved designs.

Our Senior Software Engineers (Grade 7) lead and set the strategy as well as build our products and applications - with researchers, testers, architects, analysts and designers - as part of multi-functional agile delivery teams.

You will be a leader in our team, you will coach and mentor Software Engineers.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. Salary Information

SEO Grade Salary for this role is from £38,469 (Band min) to £41,480 (Band max).

Where the maximum salary of £41,480 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £15,000 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.

Grade 7 Salary for this role is from £50,155 (Band min) to £60,781 (Band max).

Where the maximum salary of £60,781 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £5,000 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

Stage 1: Application

Applications must include:

2. An anonymised curriculum vitae including education, professional qualifications and full employment history, giving details of key achievements.

When giving details in your redacted CV you should highlight your experience in line with essential criteria below:

  • Recent experience of open-source technologies such as Java or NodeJS.
  • Developing on cloud-based environments like AWS and Azure.
  • SQL, Oracle and noSQL database applications such as Postgres, MySQL, and MongoDB are requested.
  • The skills to build up a useful, robust automated test suite to support continuous integration.
  • Knowledge and experience of APIs, RESTful services and Micro service Architectures.
  • A good understanding of TDD and BDD.

Stage 2: Coding Test

If you are successful at Stage 1, you will be invited to complete a coding exercise. You will have 5 days to complete this activity.

Stage 3: Interview

If you’re successful at the Coding Test, you will be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams.

There, you will be assessed against the experiences listed in the essential criteria above listed in Stage 1.

Interviews will take place at regular intervals throughout the advert.
