Job Title: Software Engineer – Combat Systems
Location: New Malden. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.
Salary: Up to £45k depending on skills and experience
What you’ll be doing:
- Hands on use of the SMCS Hardware
- Conducting investigation of system wide issues, raising of observation reports for defects, and coding and testing the changes
- Prototyping and development of new software functionality to address the needs of the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet.
- Undertaking installation of new builds & operating environments
- Supporting planning & coordination of target testing on kit.
- Supporting the Desktop Development Environment for testing
- Conducting investigation of defects as required and support of defect clearance and release acceptance process
Your skills and experiences:
Essential:
- Experience of integrating software-intensive, complex real-time embedded systems
- Programming background using C++ / C# or Ada (or similar)
- Able to apply past experience to support the understanding and investigation of new issues
- Familiar with Windows Operating System (Client & Server) functionality and virtualisation technologies
- Ability to methodically investigate a symptom to understand and isolate the root cause
- Experience of interacting with engineers across multiple disciplines e.g., hardware, software & systems
- Experience of delivering systems, working to deadlines and working in a pressurised environment
Desirable:
- Experience working in software development, engineering or defence would be an advantage
Engineers at all levels should possess an academic qualification in Engineering or other related STEM subjects as well as specific (either academic or professional) qualifications and become recognised as Incorporated or Chartered Engineers through an appropriate recognised professional institution. Engineers are encouraged, and will be supported, to achieve the relevant accreditation. Preference will be given to candidates who are already professionally registered.

The SMCS – Submarine Command Systems Team:
Join the exciting world of Submarine Command Systems (SMCS) and become a pivotal member of the team responsible for supporting and delivering the latest capability into the Royal Navy Submarine fleet. You will gain a detailed understanding of SMCS through hands on experience of and developing integral software components.
