Head of Software Engineering (Hands-on) required for a Software Solutions Provider, with thousands of established users, paying up to £110K + Bonus + Stock Options + Benefits

Hybrid / Remote working: With Central Manchester offices and a remote first workforce; this is suitable for people looking for frequent office time and/or remote working. *Please do note, with this being a Senior Leadership role, meetings on occasion would be preferred at this level.

The Opportunity:

A great opportunity for a "Hands on" Head of Software Engineering; this is a relatively small business with substantial plans to scale and invest; due to current team size(s), we’re looking for someone willing to be hands-on as required as they continue to scale and build out capacity. This doesn't mean lots of hands on coding however we are hoping for someone who can work 121 with Software Engineers, ensure code quality and code reviews.

This Head of Software Engineering will play an integral role in helping to scale an already successful business; you will be rewarded by having a huge impact on growth and technical decision making, driving key improvements in software engineering as well as headcount in a quality focused business.

The Role:

• Ideally previous experience with hands on Development with Ruby on Rails, some basic JavaScript, Code Reviews and Engineering best practice. (Ruby is NOT Essential and other languages are fine, as long as you are adaptable to this tech stack)

• Work directly with Senior Leaders (CEO & MD) on Software Engineering Strategy and Product

• Advise and be instrumental in Cloud Adoption, Future Infrastructure, Security and DevOps investment.

• Experience of scaling a software engineering team, assessing risks, improving approaches, best practice and documentation

• Managing and coaching of Engineering Teams

• Recruitment of an expanded Team – 3 – 5 hires in the next 12 months initially.

Growth Plans / Areas of investment:

• This will be a hands-on leadership role where we are looking for someone who can still help with development approaches as well as the broader software engineering team and output. Scale up experience would of course be very much of interest.

• The business is on the cusp of investment which will be in place within months and now have the need to scale, but *not* at all costs!

• Investment in Cloud services (Moving to Cloud), Considering Security, and DevOps are also key aims for the business as their products and services gain even more momentum.

This is the type of role where you are joining a dedicated team who have bought into “what is possible”, and you will have every opportunity to scale and deliver this properly. (This growth will not be rushed and quality will not go out the window due to any investments.)
