Job description

As a Lead Developer, your duties will include:

  • guiding the ways in which the team/tribe work
  • identifying appropriate technology and approach
  • contributing to the developer community
  • technical leadership, coaching and mentoring your team/tribe
  • promote knowledge sharing and adoption of good practice

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  • Modern standards approach. You can demonstrate a strong understanding of the most appropriate modern standards and practices, and how they are applied. You can coach and guide others in these standards.
  • Development process optimisation (management). You can analyse current processes. You can identify and implement opportunities to optimise processes. You can lead and develop a team of experts to deliver service improvements. You can help to evaluate and establish requirements for the implementation of changes by setting policy and standards.
  • Programming and build (software engineering). You can collaborate with others when necessary to review specifications. You can use the agreed specifications to design, code, test and document programs or scripts of medium-to-high complexity, using the right standards and tools.
  • Systems design. You can design systems characterised by medium levels of risk, impact, and business or technical complexity. You can select appropriate design standards, methods and tools, and ensure they are applied effectively. You can review the systems designs of others to ensure the selection of appropriate technology, efficient use of resources and integration of multiple systems and technology.
  • Team Leadership. You can lead and mentor a multi-disciplinary team across geographically dispersed environments and can make effective decisions.

Benefits

Our reward package:

As our Lead Developer, your starting salary will be £49149.00. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minimum. Our 2022-25 pay award means the salary will increase to £52799.00 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards £56738.00 over time.

In addition you will be paid £5000.00 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. Whilst in post, you will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2022 until March 2024 in your monthly pay.

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £72622.00 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

We operate an on-call roster in Technology to provide 24/7/365 support to respond to operational service requirements. This post may be part of an on-call roster and the postholder would be required to participate in an on-call roster where in operation.
