Software Developer
Cofnod is the North Wales Environmental Information Service, providing a hub for wildlife data across North Wales. Together with three other Local Environmental Records Centres (LERCs), it forms part of an information network across Wales. The first national network of its kind in the
UK.
Cofnod is a ‘Not for Profit’ company, funded through a variety of public and private sector sources. Its remit is to gather a range of environmental data (primarily wildlife data) and to make these available to a wide variety of public, private and voluntary users. To achieve this, Cofnod has developed and maintains its own data management and reporting systems. Due to their success these systems are used by other LERCs across the UK.
1. JOB IDENTIFICATION
Job title: Software Developer
Location: Flexible, working from home with the possibility of working in our offices in Bangor
Hours: 21 hours per week
Contract: This is a permanent post subject to a 1-month probationary period, during which time you will be expected to establish your suitability for the post.
Pay: Salary is linked to Local Government Pay Scales. Salary will be paid monthly in arrears, by BACS.
Leave: Annual leave will be calculated pro rata on 21 hours, based on 25 days per annum, rising to 28 within 3 years. You will also be entitled to statutory leave and the period between Christmas and New Year, calculated pro rata.
Location: Cofnod offices, Bangor LL57 4FG. Remote working would be considered. Some work-related travel may be required.
Travel: Expenses for work related travel will be paid for the use of public transport and at 45p per mile for private car use.
Pension: You will automatically be enrolled into our pension scheme, to which we will contribute up to a maximum of 7.5% of your salary.
Responsible to: Information Systems Manager
Responsible for: Working alongside the Information Systems Manager to develop and support bespoke software for use by Cofnod and its external users
2. JOB PURPOSE
The purpose of the Software Developer is to assist in the development and maintenance of Cofnod’s data management and reporting systems. This will include:
1. Development of software to improve access to and the management of our data
2. Maintenance of existing data management and reporting software
3. Technical support and guidance for internal and external users of our software
3. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
The post-holder will:
a) Undertake the development of appropriate software and web applications to aid data management and reporting within Cofnod and for external users
b) Develop software to work with the databases managed by Cofnod and external users
c) Where required, extract data from a variety of formats
d) Where required, establish links between our databases and other external data sources
e) Provide Input to the maintenance and development of Cofnod’s Disaster Recovery Plan
f) Where required liaise with system users
g) Where required provide training to ensure our staff and external users are competent in the use of our software h) Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of IT systems and technology i) Where required undertake appropriate administrative duties j) Be flexible and undertake appropriate other tasks as necessary, or as directed by Cofnod’s Manager or the Board of Directors
The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by your changing role within the organisation and the overall business objectives of the organisation.
4. MAIN ACTIVITIES
These will include:
a) Undertaking a wide range of complex and technical work, following prioritised workflows, whilst occasionally dealing with unexpected issues
b) Understand and develop plans for dealing with user requirements for software
c) Develop and maintain software for internal and external use to meet user requirements
d) Deal with software issues reported through our online support system and work with the Information Systems Manager to identify and prioritise responses
e) Where required undertake the development and maintenance of Cofnod’s website
f) Liaise with a wide range of contacts, which may include:
- Internal software users
- External software users
- Commercial IT professionals
- IT and other staff at LERCs
- The Cofnod Board of Directors g) Assisting and supporting Cofnod staff to ensure their IT software requirements are met h) Undertaking various administrative tasks i) Travelling within North Wales and occasionally within the UK

Ability to create and manage relational databases, specifically

Ability to use spatial data types within Microsoft SQL Server ✓
Ability to implement web-based mapping solutions using a web ✓ mapping API, ideally Bing Maps ✓
