About the team
The software developer apprentice will assist the digital function in Ofqual’s Information Management (IM) team in building software to meet user needs. The role holder will be involved in building full-stack applications, including front-end user-facing websites, APIs, and data stores. It will work in a cross-functional agile team of software developers, quality assurance and test engineers, business analysts, user researchers and interaction designers.
The software developer apprentice will participate in the full software development lifecycle, from discovery through to release. The role holder will work as part of an Agile team and have strong communication and interpersonal skills as well as a strong attention to detail.
In this role, you’ll work towards your Level 4 Software Development Technician qualification, delivered by our expert training team at Baltic Apprenticeships.
What will the post holder be doing?
A Typical Day in the Job:
- Assist in the development of accessible digital solutions that support effective regulation, fully reflecting needs of users as expressed through user journeys and personas.
- Participate in Alpha, Beta and Live project stages, implementing architecture and application design, testing and deployment.
- Deliver solutions using Azure services and functions, modern web frameworks, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Operate the production services you build and have an understanding of the whole system, including finding ways to improve system robustness, resilience and stability
- Ensure that technical decisions support align with standards around quality, performance, reliability, scalability, security and data protection.
- Share knowledge of tools and techniques within the Information Management team, and other colleagues at all levels of the organisation, tailoring communications for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Contribute effectively to project teams, supporting planning, identifying and managing risks, and sharing knowledge.
- Full training and support will be provided by your workplace mentor and from the Baltic team.
Desired Qualities, Skills and Knowledge:
Passion for Software Development
Knowledge of C#, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript would be beneficial
Someone who is passionate and enthusiastic
Minimum of Grade 4/C or equivalent in Maths and English is required for this role
Ability to communicate internally with colleagues.

Ofqual works flexibly, with a hybrid office/home based working model. Employees will spend at least two to three days a week working from our office in Coventry. As Coventry will be your base location expenses for travel to the office will not be paid.
Final panel interviews will be held remotely via Microsoft Teams. Further details will be provided at invite to interview stage.
One of our resourcing colleagues will be on hand to answer any queries you may have throughout the process.
