Background Information

Fortalice was established in 1977 to provide emergency accommodation and support for women and children experiencing domestic abuse within their own homes.

The organisation has expanded over the past years and now provides a wide range of services for adults, families, children and young people within both the Refuge and the Outreach Support Centre. The ethos of Fortalice in relation to support is to focus on self-help, promoting self-esteem, confidence and independence to enable victims to break free from abusive relationships and reduce the chance of re-victimisation thus moving on to a self-sustaining, independent life.

Purpose of the role:

Using a whole family approach, the Family Cohesion Worker will work in both Refuge and Outreach community settings to work holistically with families who are, or have, suffered from the effects of domestic abuse and violence. The work will involve supporting children, young people and parents to rebuild their family units and recover from the trauma they have experienced. The Worker will help parents to understand the child’s or young person’s position, whilst working with the child or young person to improve their wellbeing and resilience and providing strategies for both the child and parent to manage challenging behaviours. Identifying and assisting with safeguarding issues is a key part of this role.

Key skills:

  • Proven ability to understand the impact of trauma and the complexities around domestic abuse
  • Experience of working with families where the family unit has broken down, and using creative and proven strategies to support the rebuilding of their relationship
  • Proven ability to support families with complex issues including challenging behaviour, mental health issues, self-harm, drug or alcohol abuse and risk taking behaviour
  • An ability to work in a whole family approach to support families in practical matters to meet issues/needs identified in individual support plans and promote, self-esteem, confidence, and independence
