We are currently looking for a Social Media Specialist to join our News & Media within the Communication & Engagement group.


This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based in 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf London, E14 4PU. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas. We are currently implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 4 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, this can flex up to 8 days a month, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly. Remote working is potentially available for some specific roles. Please discuss this with the recruiting manager before accepting an appointment.

The MHRA Communications and Engagement Group is a multi-award-winning team that has a consistent track record of achievement and providing value for money. Our focus is to support the Agency to deliver its business outcomes by putting patients and the public at the centre of all our work. We are organised in the following teams: News & Media, Communications, Patient and Public Stakeholder Engagement and Customer Experience. The role sits within the News and Media team.


The News and Media Team is responsible for managing the Agency’s profile and reputation on high profile, sensitive and day-to-day news and issues affecting the organisation and its remit confidently with the media and social media, responding to media enquiries as well as promoting, explaining and justifying its scientific expertise and wider contribution to public health and science nationally and globally. We implement and deliver effective news and issues management strategies at pace, developing and nurturing media and social media contacts, responding quickly and accurately to breaking or negative news stories to limit potentially damaging coverage and drive the Agency’s reputation, evaluating outcomes and results.

What’s the role?

Working to the Head of Proactive Media and Science Communication, you will take ownership of the cycle for social media production within the Agency, helping to enhance its reputation and promote the wider contribution it makes to public health and science, both nationally and globally.

Creative and passionate about turning complex information into interesting, engaging content, you’ll manage the Agency’s social media channels, using them to communicate effectively and appropriately with our audiences. A track record of delivering successful campaigns in a fast-paced media and communications environment for a large, complex, and expert organisation is key.


Key responsibilities:


  • Plan and develop interesting, engaging, and accessible social media content from highly technical and complex information, unique to each platform’s audience and style.
  • Embed social media in all media handling for both proactive announcements and reactive media handling.
  • Manage the agency’s social media accounts and advise staff and senior leaders including the executive committee and chief executive.
  • Identify and work with key influencers on social media and collaborate across patient, public, stakeholders, the wider healthcare system and government to amplify social media messaging.
  • Monitor, evaluate and report social media coverage. Build audience insight using appropriate tools to monitor content and listen to conversations on social media.
  • Act as an Agency spokesperson, providing authoritative, clear, honest and credible communications to the media and social media on Agency issues, and participate in a 24-hour media on-call rota.

Our successful candidate will:


  • Good written, editorial, social media engagement and oral communications skills with a strong, proven understanding of what makes a good news story and interesting, accessible content.
  • Good knowledge and experience of working in a busy social media / media environment in a large, complex, expert organisation, including, ability to plan and proactively create effective social media content
  • Regularly monitor your own work against milestones ensuring individual needs are considered when setting tasks. Act promptly to reassess workloads and priorities when there are conflicting demands to maintain performance
  • Ability to develop good working relationships and influence social media influencers and senior managers, dealing with conflict and challenge in a calm, measured way
  • Experience of evaluating social media tools to assess performance and inform business decisions
