Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
The Communications and Advocacy section at UN Women Headquarters in New York seeks to enlist the services of a Communications and Social Media Consultant to support social media outreach and engagement. This is a New York based consultancy, which requires in-person presence in UN Women’s offices in New York.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Social Media Specialist, the Communications and Social Media Consultant will be responsible for:
Supporting daily social media outreach and engagement around UN Women’s work and the issues of gender equality and women’s empowerment, specifically carrying out the below tasks:
- In close coordination with the Executive Office and the Social Media Team, develop strategic and creative content ideas for the Executive Director’s Twitter and future LinkedIn account.
- Draft impactful social media messaging for the Executive Director and other global UN Women social media accounts in close coordination with colleagues across UN Women.
- Develop growth and engagement tactics for the Executive Director social media accounts, in line with best practice and industry standards.
- Monitor, moderate and respond to incoming comments and queries on the Executive Director accounts.
- Film and edit short social media videos featuring the Executive Director and highlight UN Women’s work and its impact. Package these videos for social media distribution.
- Shoot photos of meetings, events and mission with Executive Director participation, prepare and package these photos for social media distribution.
- Curate social media content around organizational priorities, including UN Women’s work and its impact around the world in close coordination with the Communication Team in New York and the global communication network.
- Monitor and use opportunities to tap into social media conversations, initiatives and campaigns and develop tactics to expand the ED's reach and influence
- Provide regular social media analytics, evaluation and data-driven suggestions on how to increase following and engagement under the guidance of the Social Media Team lead.
- Research, plan and develop new ED accounts as appropriate in close coordination with the Executive Office and the Social Media Team.
- Stay abreast of social media platform trends and in close coordination with the UN Women Social Media lead provide advice and suggestions on optimal platform use.
- Conduct other duties as requested during the period of the consultancy.

Required Skills and Experience
- Master’s degree or equivalent in one of the following or related fields: Communications/Journalism/ Media/ Digital Communication/Social Media.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- At least 5 years of experience managing social media accounts at the global level.
- Demonstrated experience in mobilizing and engaging social media audiences through integrated digital and social media strategies.
- Proven track-record of writing and editing engaging content for global social media accounts.
- Occasional availability outside of regular working hours, during special events and in response to global unfolding news.
- Knowledge of women’s rights and gender equality issues considered an asset.
- Familiarity with the UN system is considered an asset.
- Experience with photography and videography for social media considered an asset.
- Professional knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator Premiere and After Effects is considered an asset.
