Job description

Learn with the best

Vets now are proud to announce that we are now accepting applications for our rotating internship in our Glasgow hospital.

The Vets Now small animal rotating internships are designed for qualified veterinary surgeons. The programme serves as an excellent foundation for those wishing to pursue discipline specific specialist training in the future, or those keen to experience and gain competency in emergency medicine and surgery.

This post is for a 13-month period.

We also offer an opportunity to remain employed with us once the intern programme has been completed by taking up a role in one of our 58 out-of-hours clinics or two 24/7 emergency and specialty hospitals across the UK for interested candidates.

Interns will rotate through each service in 3 or 4 weekly blocks and receive allocated time to undertake an externship either external to our hospitals, or in a service outside of the predefined rotations. Interns also play an integral role in providing out-of-hours emergency care where they get the opportunity to have primary case responsibility with the support of an experienced team of emergency out-of-hours vets.

Interns will experience a diverse caseload and have both direct and indirect case management responsibilities including opportunities for emergency and routine procedures. Teaching is an essential component of the internship, with weekly didactic seminars, which will augment the clinical experience. There is also the opportunity for extensive in-house CPD.

About the opportunity

Embracing the learning environment and being inspired by our experts requires an Intern committed to integrity and ethical standards with a strong emphasis on client and patient care. Interns must proactively engage in their own training and career advancement by attending pre-planned seminars, journal clubs and local ad-hoc teaching opportunities. They will also be responsible for working with clinical mentors to actively take part in research projects.

Interns will work with their supervising clinician to participate effectively in all aspects of planning, diagnosis, and treatment of cases. Animal welfare and the ethics of interventions must be considered by balancing practical and financial factors when determining appropriate patient care. Therefore, the ability to apply prior knowledge and experience to maintain the high clinical standards expected within our hospitals is essential.

Interns will openly engage in case discussions with the senior supervising clinicians, residents and senior nursing team and should contribute to a positive, informative, respectful, and inclusive environment for all. Attention to detail, particularly with maintaining accurate records and written correspondence is also a key component of this role.
