North British Distillery is one of Scotland’s oldest and largest Scotch grain whisky producers. It is a distillation and warehouse maturation business selling grain spirit - the base for Blended Scotch Whisky - and its by-products. Almost the entire production of North British grain spirit is sold to customers for blending purposes. Quantities of North British grain whisky are included in many well-known blended brands.
We currently have an excellent opportunity for Shift Managers to join us at our Edinburgh Distillery. The available positions are permanent, full-time roles reporting to the Distillery or Feeds Plant Operations Manager. The purpose of this role is to lead the Distillery or Feed Plant Operators to work together safely and efficiently to deliver the budgeted daily and weekly performance in accordance with an agreed weekly plan, controlling all direct and indirect costs to, or better than, budget values.
Skills & Experience:
Background
An experienced and engaging direct line manager with proven success in leading operational teams within a brewing, distilling, FEMAS, FMCG, COMAH site or Oil and Gas environment. Able to work flexibly and with energy to motivate reports, whilst also collaborating efficiently with peers as part of the day-to-day management team.
Technical Experience
- Formal Management Qualification and/or several years experience of management in a warehousing or FMCG environment
- Intermediate PC Skills - Formula and graphs in excel, import photographs in PowerPoint, high standard of document production and report writing
- Basic user of computerised maintenance management systems
- Demonstrable experience in working with others to deliver tangible and measurable improvements.
Health, Safety & Environment
- IOSH Managing Safely- or the ability and willingness to work towards this
- Trained, competent and experienced in Permit to Work systems, risk assessments and method statements
- Solid knowledge of HSE legislation
Leadership
- Demonstrable experience in leading, developing, managing and motivating teams, as well as direct reports
Behaviour
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work closely with direct reports and external contractors to ensure that all work is properly planned and coordinated
- Confident, with the ability to gain trust and respect
- Flexible and able to respond quickly to business needs
Main Responsibilities:
1. Ensuring that all Distillery/Feeds Plant activities on site are carried out in accordance with the relevant work instruction, adhering to the necessary Company health, safety and environmental requirements and complying with all regulatory current legislation to maintain a safe working environment for all employees
2. Maintaining an awareness of the regulatory and Company standards that apply to the role such as HMRC, COMAH and H&S. COMAH specific - Understand and act as On Scene Controller in the event of an evacuation or major incident, and regularly participate in COMAH improvement activity.
3. Issue Permits to Work for certain activities, ensuring an appropriate risk assessment and that a method statement has been approved for the task and is followed throughout the duration of execution
4. Line management responsibility for Distillery/Feed Plant personnel through monitoring progress through annual Performance Focus Reviews, daily target reviews, supporting training development, creating succession plans as appropriate and taking corrective action where required.
5. Daily communication with all stakeholders regarding progress against the department’s requirements and KPIs, resolving any required corrective actions through tiered management True North process.
6. Managing all available resources to optimise efficiency and meet budget and cost targets in the Distillery/Feeds Plant.
7. Provide leadership to the Distillery or Feeds Plant Shift teams, developing a culture, and implementing practices, that inspire all employees to achieve their full potential.
8. Any other duties that may reasonably be required in line with your contractual role.
