JOB TITLE: Welder / Sheet Metal Fabricator
REPORTS TO: Fabrication Foreman
HOURS: Full Time (40 hours per week)
LOCATION: Bristol – Warmley BS30 8TY
We have an excellent opportunity to work with the largest generator specialist in the South West, based in Bristol. This role is workshop based, and the main focus will be working with sheet metal, welding and fabricating custom-designed enclosures and ISO containers to house our range of diesel generators in order to protect them from all weather conditions.
As our finished products come in a variety of sizes, some of which can be up to approximately 40ft in length, the ability to work in a physically demanding environment in sometimes difficult conditions is essential.
KEY TASKS & MAIN DUTIES
1. Operating workshop machinery – Bandsaw, brake press, guillotine, folders and bending rolls
2. Fabrication of aluminium, stainless and mild steel sheet and sections, thickness from 1mm to 15mm
3. MIG Welding sheet from 1mm to 15mm, sections from 3mm to 15mm
4. TIG Welding – aluminium up to 5mm, stainless up to 3mm sheet
5. Manual cutting with Plasma and Flame cut methods
6. Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications to assess job requirements
7. Work to written manufacturing instructions, using templates, measuring instruments and tools to mark out layout lines and reference points
8. Assembling prepared parts and joining them by bolting, welding or soldering
9. Grinding, filing, cleaning and polishing using appropriate hand held and powered tools and equipment to achieve finished product
10. Completing visual inspections of products and raising any non-conformances
11. Liaise with other fabricators / supervisors / management to ensure parts availability is appropriate for required tasks, so that optimum production efficiency and effectiveness is achieved
12. Maintain a clean and orderly workplace environment compatible with an open workshop facility
13. Comply with the Company Health & Safety Policy, including carrying out general housekeeping to ensure workshop areas are tidy. This includes company vehicles.
14. Comply with all aspects of the company quality management procedures (ISO 9001:2015), environmental management standards (ISO 14001: 2015) and the ISO 45001:2018 Health & Safety standard, proactively contributing to the company’s continuous improvement programme.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Ideally, a level 2 qualification in a sheet metal, structural steel or fabrication related discipline or modern apprenticeship in Engineering Fabrication and Welding
- General engineering background with experience using general workshop tools/equipment
- Previous experience in metalworking/fabrication
- TIG welding experience
- Experience of other weld processes – Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), ‘Stick’ Welding (MMA)
- Coded welder – Desirable
- Experience of CNC machine operations (setting up cut paths, nesting cut sheets) – Desirable
- Reliability, good communication skills and teamwork abilities
- Attention to detail and good hand/eye co-ordination to achieve high quality welds
- Willingness to learn new things to deal with changes in technology and best practice
