Every year we host over 300 performances of classical music, rock, pop and other music-related and spoken word events, in addition to a diverse learning programme. The building also provides a stunning location for conferences, meetings and other events.

The role:

The Senior Technician (Sound) is the technical point of contact at the Bridgewater Hall. Working directly with clients and the wider BWH team to manage the smooth arrival and departure of all events ensuring compliance with all venue health and safety policies and regulations. Ensuring any connections and equipment that is set up is electrically and mechanically safe and meets current electrical and wider health and safety standards.

Provide technical and physical support within the venue, preparing areas for the arrival of all events. Set up, operate and pack down, rigging, sound, lighting, and AV equipment. Complete room set ups as required, including but not limited to seating, staging and furniture.

Liaise with the Facilities department regarding the day-to-day building maintenance and provide effective cover on evening and weekends.

The Senior Technician (Sound) is specifically responsible for operating in house sound equipment (rota dependant) and will support the Technical Manager with planned preventative maintenance, organisation, and procurement of any sound equipment to facilitate continued development and improvement of the sound technology within the Hall.

To assist the Technical Manager in the training and development of the technical team members, ensuring their continual development in accordance with company policies.

Key responsibilities:

  • To supervise technical staff to ensure completion of tasks by given deadlines ensuring compliance with current health & safety regulations at all times.
  • To be a non-event Duty Manager and be a part of the Emergency Response Team (ERT).
  • To liaise with the Technical Manager regarding the sound related requirements of forthcoming events.
  • To act as one of the in-house sound engineers and be in attendance during events to operate sound, lighting and AV equipment and to carry out repairs, modification and adjustment as required.
  • To be actively involved with the technical production of events and concerts, including the installation and operation of equipment with particular responsibility for room and event setups. This is to include, but not be limited to: staging, seating, furniture, AV or lighting equipment, as appropriate and to support load ins and outs as required.
  • To liaise with all hirers and provide technical support for their particular event, giving advice on design and operation, specifically sound related issues.
  • To act as house rigger for load ins and outs, having a comprehensive understanding of the limits of the Bridgewater Hall rig. The Senior Technician (Sound) will liaise with production to establish their loads and points, advise on all rigging related matters. Attach motors to Bridgewater Hall points and safely rig any items around the venue.
  • Be responsible for opening the building at weekends and ensure the building is secure at the close of business.
  • Assist in controlling and monitoring of Building Management System (BMS) ensuring maintenance of the building’s environmental conditions and provide effective cover for the Facilities Department at evenings and weekends.
  • To carry out general building maintenance as required, including - lamp replacement, statutory checks, PAT testing and repairs.
  • General maintenance, routine safety, maintenance and stock control of all Bridgewater Hall technical equipment and furniture.
  • To work well as part of the team, working proactively with others and other departments, for the benefit of our customers.
  • To keep up to date with current guidelines, procedures and regulations undertaking training as required.
  • To undertake any other duties appropriate to the post or assigned by the Technical Manager.

Person specification:

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Educated to degree level in audio related subject or strong and relevant experience in the use of modern production and sound control systems.
  • Good working knowledge of lighting and AV systems and good functional understanding of rigging systems. Comfortable working at height.
  • A common sense approach to resolving technical issues, the ability to work to tight deadlines whilst staying calm under pressure.
  • Experience working within a live music venue.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with national and international promoters and hirers.
  • Flexible approach to working hours in order to fulfil business requirements. Ability to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • A good understanding of current Health & Safety issues.
  • Examples of self-motivation and ability to work on own initiative.
  • An approachable/welcoming character is essential with an emphasis on creating and sustaining good working relationships.

The following attributes would be desirable:

  • Good working knowledge of Digico SD10, Galileo and Meyer Systems.
  • 3 Day rigging for the entertainment Industry or NRC Level 2.
  • Experience operating and programming Chamsys lighting consoles.
  • IPAF Certification.
  • Experience with CAD or similar software applications.
  • Literacy and numeracy skills (educated to GCSE level C or above in Mathematics and English, or equivalent).
  • Completed an electrical apprenticeship to C&G L3-2365 standard. BS7671 18th Edition or BS7909 Temporary Installations.
