Our Functional Genomics department at GSK comprises of several disciplines that provide the deep scientific knowledge and technical capabilities required to discover and validate potential novel therapeutic targets through the application of extensive genetic analyses, high throughput genome editing and endophenotyping in well-characterised human cellular and in vivo models.
Together with the ability to draw on genotypic and phenotypic databases from our world-leading partnerships with the UK BioBank and 23andMe, and to interrogate the genome through internal and collaborative efforts with the Altius Institute, Open Targets, and the newly-created Laboratory of Genomics Research (LGR) with CRISPR pioneers Jennifer Doudna and Jonathan Weissman at the University of California, we aim to redefine how the industry approaches drug discovery to deliver transformative medicines for our patients.
An exciting Secondment / Fix-term (till the end of the year) opportunity has opened within the Primary Immune Cell group. Working in a multi-faceted, dynamic, and cutting-edge scientific environment, this laboratory-based role will give you the opportunity: a) to apply your molecular and cell biology expertise to build and support functional genomic screens, b) obtain practical experience in target identification and validation, c) work with key partners across the business and interface collaboratively across local and global matrix teams.
In this role you will
- Design and implement large-scale functional genomic and bespoke disease modelling studies, with a particular focus on immunology, employing physiological- and/or disease-relevant cellular models and assays
- Develop and execute phenotypic assays such as FACS and cellular imaging.
- Employ molecular characterization of samples at genomic, RNA, and protein levels.
- Work in a matrix team environment to enable delivery of project and department objectives to the highest possible scientific standard.
- Ensuring compliance with all GSK R&D data integrity practices, ethics codes, standards and training, and safety training and practices.
- Communicate experimental findings effectively, in written and verbal formats to multiple internal and external stakeholders

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
- PhD or equivalent experience in genomics, molecular or cellular biology
- Extensive experience of primary cell culture
- Broad experience and in-depth knowledge in phenotypic assays including FACS
- Experience in a broad range of molecular & cellular biology techniques
- Demonstrable experience solving scientific problems
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
- Broad experience and in-depth knowledge in CRISPR gene editing at single gene or screening level
- Proven experience in immunology research
- Experience in B or T human primary cell culture
- Familiarity with genetic, proteomic, imaging, and/or other ‘omics technologies
- Ability to formulate and communicate a coherent vision/research plan.
- Strong enterprise behaviour working within multidisciplinary teams.
