The Role:
Arup Studio is looking for an established design leader to help to oversee the growing Strategic and User Experience design team and to promote our services.
We’re looking for an inspiring practitioner with an understanding and interest in business development to work with the team and with partners across the organisation to develop and execute compelling UX strategies, designs and service propositions that demonstrate value for clients and communities alike. You will help shape and manage our team with the goal of increasing our visibility and profile, while expanding our pipeline. This includes business development, planning, design project and thought leadership, as well as mentoring. You will report to the Studio Lead and you will partner across the department and wider organisation with technology, marketing, buildings, water and energy, urban planning, and other related experts.

The Opportunity:
Studio is our strategic design and user experience team within Arup. Our core aim is bringing people to the core of the design process in order to shape a more sustainable, human-centred built environment through creative and innovative design solutions.

The Studio operates across a range of sectors, working with city governments, local councils, developers, universities, cultural institutions, tech companies and infrastructure providers. We have worked with clients such as British Land, Defra, Environment Agency, University of Melbourne, Victoria & Albert Museum, Alphabet, Highways England, and city governments in Amsterdam, Stockholm and Sheffield, amongst others. We also collaborate with academic partners such as the Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL, RMIT University in Melbourne, and the Royal College of Art.
Role and Responsibilities include:
The new Associate Designer position will be pivotal to enable Studio’s sustainable growth. Over the next stages and will take a share of responsibility for the creative and commercial success of our work. An ideal candidate will take part in the following activities:
Support the Studio Lead to drive the team’s creative and commercial development. Work with the Studio lead and the rest of the team to keep developing our voice and brand. Collaborate with other Arup Team Leads to understand trends across domains and maximise opportunities to collaborate and develop our services. Explore new markets, research emerging trends, and suggest new project and partnership opportunities aligned with our strategy
Ability to work with clients and partners to help reframe project assumptions and push them to focus on more strategic topics. Get to know key clients and build strong relationships and support the development of a strong project pipeline. Lead the different stages of a project—this includes shaping project scope, contributing to internal and external strategy, and conducting research.
Your portfolio should reflect an exceptional foundation of design principles and how they translate to physical, service and / or digital mediums

- Demonstrated success in design management, impactful /purpose driven work, and a passion for innovation across products, spaces and services using user-centred design methods and knowledge of the potential of emerging technology.
- Experience leading, developing and growing design teams. Strong ability to understand insights and turn them into strategic plans
- Experience in building strong, strategic relationships that will enable you to support our growth in key service and market areas
- An understanding of the commercial aspects of running a business unit to help us grow and meet our revenue targets
- Solid understanding of creative processes across virtual and physical channels. Plan and host collaborative workshops and work sessions with internal and external teams
Qualification:
Masters / Graduate Degree in Architecture, Interaction or Service Design, Design Management, Product Design or equivalent professional experience
