Due to internal promotion, Sunderland City Council are seeking a dynamic Senior Practitioner Occupational Therapist to be part of the Community Occupational Therapy Team.
Sunderland City Council has developed a thriving Community Therapy Service, encompassing a range of diverse and exciting teams and services across the city. The primary objective of the service is to support residents in the management of their disability or long-term health condition, enabling people to lead fulfilling, safe and independent lives.
Community Occupational Therapists play a key role in the service, completing assessments, problem solving and promoting customer safety and quality of life. The service promotes independence by giving advice on how to carry out tasks differently by suggesting equipment to assist with self care tasks, recommending alterations to property to make the environment more accessible and signposting to other agencies for further support and advice.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in establishing a caseload of complex cases involving adults & children, as well as providing consultation in respect of customers, providing expert advice and guidance on cases for other therapists. Candidates should have the ability to work collaboratively and have effective communication and listening skills, including skills to produce good quality reports.
Candidates should have significant experience and skills of advanced, safe, and effective moving and assisting with vulnerable people and significant experience in the provision of assistive equipment.
The Senior Practitioner role works alongside the team manager in the development and leadership of staff within the Team and will also be involved with training and developments for therapy colleagues. Senior Practitioners will have the opportunity to be involved in delegated projects both within the team and across the service.
Supervision will be provided by a Therapy Team Manager in the service area.
Essential requirements are a recognised diploma/degree in Occupational Therapy & current registration with the Health & Care Professions Council. Candidates should be able to demonstrate significant experience working as an Occupational Therapist in Health or Social care with vulnerable people; & the ability to provide safe and effective Occupational Therapy assessments. They must also possess the ability to work collaboratively and have previous experience of working in an environment which requires effective communication & listening skills, including report writing.
The service strives to maintain high standards of customer care and works with its practitioners to assure continuous professional development, demonstrating best practise and a high commitment to the undergraduate education of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy students.
Therapies work Monday to Friday, and the council offers flexible working patterns, including a combination of office based and home working.
Annual Leave starts at 25 days, rising to 30 days after 5 years’ service, with previous working in council or NHS roles considered for annual leave entitlement, provided there is evidence of continuous service.
For candidates currently working in the NHS, there is the option to maintain NHS pension, with contributions from the council for applicants, provided conditions are met.
This post is exempt from the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to a DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
