An exciting new opportunity has arisen to join our team as a Senior Paediatric Pharmacy Technician Homecare/Dispensary – Band 5 Based within the Evelina Pharmacy at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
We have a vacancy for an experienced pharmacy technician who would like to move into a senior role with a difference. This post is split between our homecare and dispensary settings.
We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated team player who would be keen to develop this newly formed position. You will play a role in the delivery of pharmaceutical care to a diverse group of patients. You will work in a structured environment providing support to the wider team to meet key directorate targets.
- Provide a safe and efficient supply of pharmaceutical products to patients. Including dispensing/checking of screened prescriptions and counselling to patients/carers.
- Medicines supply for patients on the homecare service
- Day-to-day administrative and clerical management of the homecare service.
- Stock control and inventory management.
- Assisting in the supervision and training of junior members of the team.
- Undertaking audit and project work.
- Deputise for the Principal Paediatric Pharmacy Technician.

You will already possess an accredited checking pharmacy technician (ACPT) qualification or be enrolled and working towards the qualification.
For all pharmacy technician posts you require to have successfully completed an NVQ Pharmaceutical Services Level 3 or equivalent and be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Duties and Responsibilities
Homecare Duties
- Under the instruction of the Paediatric Pharmacist responsible for homecare, process homecare prescriptions and homecare invoices following standard operating procedures.
- Work and communicate closely with the Pharmacy Homecare team to ensure the homecare prescription workload is appropriately planned and managed effectively.
- Collaborate with appropriate teams to resolve, refer and respond to all homecare queries from patients, staff, or homecare providers.
- Maintain accurate homecare ‘virtual stock’ levels, undertaking routine monitoring, and correcting of discrepancies using JAC pharmacy management system.
- Ensure that homecare stock is ODELIV on the virtual stock and precise costings of homecare medicines are booked through JAC, and charged to the relevant cost centres, in line with standard operating procedures using DISP programme.
- Identify and employ suitable measures to correct any discrepancies in costings and in stock level management.
- Liaise with creditor payments to ensure prompt payment of invoices according to the Trust’s Standing Financial Instructions.
- Responsible for ensuring that all clinical incidents, complaints and concerns for homecare are reported, investigated, acted upon and learnt from.
- Assist with auditing, reporting and data entry, timely and accurately.
- Liaise with clinical pharmacists, or clinical nurse specialists to highlight and refer clinical problems, ensure that requests are processed safely and prioritised to match clinical urgency.
- Take an active role in the management of Key Performance Indicators, and the performance management of homecare companies.
- Support specialist clinical pharmacists, when called upon, in providing relevant reports, utilising available IT resources such as; Excel, QlikView, SharePoint.
- Contribute to the development of electronic systems for managing homecare.
- Support the Paediatric Pharmacist responsible for homecare in ensuring that relevant risk management initiatives are taken to minimise all areas of risk within homecare and in suggesting and implementing any improvements, where necessary.
- Provide clear, effective and professional communication, at all times, in written and verbal communication with patients, patient’s representatives, homecare provider personnel, all levels of internal staff including the rest of the pharmacy homecare team.
Operational
- Participate in the timely, accurate and cost-effective dispensing of medicines against outpatient and inpatients prescriptions.
- Participate in the final check of clinically screened prescriptions by a pharmacist.
- Participate in the provision of counselling and advice to patients/carers on the use of their/child’s medication.
- Participate in the dispensing and checking of controlled drugs. Ensuring appropriate storage, accuracy and record keeping is followed.
- Participate in the dispensing and checking of clinical trial prescriptions as required.
- Ensure that procedures relating to good dispensing practice are followed, and encourage and maintain high standards and orderly methods of working.
- Encourage and support compliance with the paediatric formulary and dispensary policies.
- Participate in the Omnicell service by completing cycle counts as required.
- Participate in the medicines management service to inpatients if required.
- Participate in the maintenance of dispensary documentation.
- Assist in the collection and preparation of workload, quality and financial indicators.
- Assist in project work as required.
- Supervise stock and consumable management in the dispensary, including stock checks, stock rotation, expiry date checks and relevant documentation.
- Participate in the problem solving of incorrect stock levels, generated by stock checks and adhoc queries.
- Participate in the management of medicine waste and medication returns. Ensuring recycling and destruction procedures are adhered to.
- Participate in the investigation and required actions of drug alerts/recalls and out of stocks.
- Assist in the supervision of the day to day running of the dispensary as required by the dispensary manager.
- Assist in the supervision of pharmacy assistants, pre-reg trainee pharmacy technicians, qualified technicians and junior pharmacists in the dispensary.
- Deputise for the Pharmacy Operations Manager and Principal Paediatric Pharmacy technician when required.
- Complete the clinical trials accreditation as required.
- Undertake CPD and to attend courses in practice areas where needs are identified.
- Participate in the department performance review scheme by attending regular review sessions with the dispensary manager.
- Participate in the induction and training of volunteers, pharmacy assistants, pre-reg trainee pharmacy technicians, qualified technicians and junior pharmacists.
- Participate in the assessments and appraisals of the pharmacy assistants, pre-reg trainee pharmacy technicians and qualified technicians.
- Participate in the departmental performance review development scheme by attending regular review sessions with the Pharmacy Operations Manager.
- Participate in the various departmental rotas, including weekend, bank holiday and late night rotas.
- Undertake any other duties requested by the Pharmacy Operations Manager and Principal Paediatric Pharmacy Technician
