Senior Operations Manager (E-7 Wedgetail Production)

In March 2019, the UK Mod signed a $1.98Bn (£1.51Bn) deal with Boeing to purchase the E-7 Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning (AEW) Mk1 aircraft. The E-7 fleet will replace the current E-3D Sentry aircraft and ensure the continued delivery of the UK’s Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) capability. The aircraft will enter service in 2023 and will be operated from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland Being based upon the 737, the platform offers significant savings in training and maintenance, as well as extremely high reliability.

The Wedgetail AEW Mk1 is based upon the highly successful 737-700 IGW NG aircraft, and requires a significant modification Programme to convert it into a high-end mission system capability. To continue its commitment to the United Kingdom prosperity, Boeing is undertaking the modification at a UK location by a workforce comprised of both Boeing and subcontracted engineers and maintenance technicians in a suitably approved and equipped Maintenance Repair Organisation (MRO).

Boeing are looking for highly skilled and motivated individuals to join the Boeing team to support the Production Supplier on-site at the modification location. The modification Programme is expected to take up to 5 years to complete before the aircraft transition to the Main Operating at RAF Lossiemouth. With a plan for the 1st aircraft to fly in 2023. The Role:

The 737 to E7 conversion is being led and managed by Boeing and performed by an MRO production supplier with their own MAA Part 145 approval. The Boeing Defence UK work scope includes items such as, shipside support, CAMS laser alignment, technical services, scheduling, supply chain, training and quality assurance.

The role of the Senior Operations Manager will be to lead the integration of the Boeing UK scope with the MRO Supplier, Boeing Defence Australia and Boeing US team to ensure a seamless modification execution occurs. Ensuring the modification is performed to the required quality and to plan. The role will integrate all E7 production activities within the UK, including component production and flight testing on sites away from BHX. Responsible to the BDUK Operations Leadership and accountable to the E7 Production Operations Executive on site at BHX.

As Senior manager of a team of managers the role will lead onsite shipside support and ensure the BDUK team are working efficiently as possible within a complex organisation including Boeing US, Boeing UK, Boeing Australia and the MRO itself. The successful candidate will be a key part of the Boeing team on site at BHX.

The Senior Operations Manager will in addition support the Boeing UK Line Maintenance team at MOD Boscombe Down in 2024 during the flight testing phase of the modification under the Boeing MRP Part 145 Approval.

The Senior Operations Manager will also be a key member of the team supporting the BDUK Fixed Wing and E7 programme teams during mobilisation of the sustainment solution producing the ensuring maintenance solution that will start in 2024 is safe, efficient before handing over to the Senior Operations Manager-RAF Lossiemouth ready for execution.

The role is based full time at the Production Supplier facility at Birmingham Airport and acting as the Boeing Site Lead with occasional travel to Bristol, Middle Wallop and Boscombe Down.

To ensure alignment with the Production supplier at BHX there will be a requirement for this role to adapt their schedule to work an adjusted week, an example may be 10-12 hour days over a compressed week or Monday to Friday dependent on the phase of the modification.

Preferred skills and Experience:

  • Major extensive MRO/Modification experience in a lead/manager capacity
  • Experience of leading teams across multiple functions
  • EASA Part 66 Licence/Aerospace Engineering degree is desirable
  • An ability of flexibility to support multiple locations
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in verbal and in written form.
  • Experience of project management
  • Good knowledge and understanding of commercial/defence airline maintenance/modification and engineering operations.
  • Extremely detailed knowledge of industry and regulatory requirements as applicable to the operation and support of major modifications.
  • SC Cleared ( or able to get SC Cleared )
