BBC News is a new 24/7 multiplatform channel and stream providing the best of the BBC’s global journalism to audiences in the UK and around the world. We expect this to become Britain’s most watched news channel across the BBC’s platforms online and on television, with the ability to steam content specifically for UK audiences, as well as reaching millions of weekly viewers across the world.
Main ResponsibilitiesThis Senior Editor role will form part of the senior leadership team for the new BBC News Channel, providing BBC News around the clock, in the UK and around the world. The role holder requires advanced leadership skills in both the running of a high-pressure live news team and significant change management. The leadership team is responsible for launching and running a high-profile multi-platform new offering from BBC News in line with the editorial and strategic objectives, and as such the role requires leaders who are able to embrace change as audience needs evolve over the next few years, be highly resilient, work with uncertainty and take on new tasks, responsibilities and skills. The role will jointly manage the wider management team on the new Channel, as well as leading the Journalist roles.
Are you the right candidate?- Demonstrable change management and leadership. These leaders will need the ability to build trust, self-motivate and motivate their team as we transition the team into the new channel and new way of working, where we will embrace a flexible schedule and an agile team that can adapt to changing and emerging audience needs. The requirement for this level of change management skills is not part of the Band F roles on the current channels team.
- This role is expected to be a change leader and a highly skilled communicator, within the wider BBC News department, heralding, promoting and communicating a positive culture of ongoing transformation across news. They will be expected to confidently and positively demonstrate multiplatform and agile ways of working to our colleagues outside of the channel team and to develop and embed new workflows that integrate with the digital team.
- Experience of strategic thinking to realise our vision, with leaders who have proven ability to work across multiple platforms and require an understanding of differing audience needs whether they are accessing the new channel from their phones, their televisions, iPlayer or the website. This is a change from the current Band F roles on the channels team that require highly developed understanding of audience need for television news channels only.
- Demonstrable experience of fostering innovation. This new role will be responsible will be overseeing an editorially sophisticated agenda, spanning multiple different audiences, and requires them to lead the team in navigating this, choosing when to break away for coverage for UK audiences or for other streams on iplayer or the website.
- Substantial experience of journalism and production for linear and digital platforms, as well as proven editorial judgement and substantial experience of managing editorial and operational staff and facilities in a daily news environment.
- Demonstrates balanced and impartial judgement. Makes the right editorial decisions with guidance.
- Demonstrate a commitment to improving the diversity of the BBC’s coverage, representing all audiences and all points of view.
