We are looking for Senior EFL Teachers for our junior summer centres in London and Manchester, running from late June to 17th August 2023 depending on the centre.

Job Summary

Language in Action, part of Malvern International, are seeking an exerienced and energetic Senior Teacher for their Junior Summer School programme in London. Details of Position

At Language in Action, we provide students with the English skills and speaking confidence they need to get the most out of their experience in Manchester and well beyond.

Our Senior Teacher assists the DoS or Academic Manager in producing a language learning experience that exceeds the expectations of students and clients. He/she will oversee the administration of our Academic Programme for Juniors and be involved in all academic aspects of the centre, including supporting the teaching team, administration of placement tests, timetabling classes, classing students, and teaching, when necessary. Senior Teachers will be able to cover all duties in the absence of the DoS, with the support of the Academic Manager. They will actively collaborate with all centre staff to provide a positive learning experience and environment for students and staff. They are responsible for the welfare and safeguarding of all students in the classroom and other activities. LiA Senior Teachers are a role model in terms of teaching excellence and a positive attitude.

London: From 22th June to 17th August depending on the centre

Manchester: From 10th July to 21st August

London: Bloomsbury and Wembley areas

Manchester: All saints campus

Main Duties

Senior Teacher

  • Be a role model for teachers in terms of providing an excellent standard of teaching inside the classroom and maintaining a high morale and positive attitude outside of the classroom.
  • Attend a training day, or days, before the start of the course, and thereafter to attend any staff meetings considered necessary by the management team.
  • Prepare registers, class lists, records of work, and all paperwork required by teaching staff to comply with British Council requirements.
  • Be available to teaching staff during lesson times, before and after lessons.
  • Carry out daily classroom rounds every morning to check student attendance and follow the appropriate procedure in the event of a missing student.
  • Organise placement tests for students on arrival, the marking of tests and the efficient streaming of students into classes based on test results. Please be aware that this may well involve weekend and evening working.
  • Assign teachers to classes and classrooms, taking into account each teacher’s skillset, preference and experience
  • Compile and post timetables and remain in clear and open communication with the teaching team.
  • Assist in Group Leader welcome meetings and remain available to Group Leaders at specified and agreed times.
  • Monitor teachers' timekeeping and appearance and take appropriate action when necessary.
  • Give support, guidance and advice to teachers, as necessary.
  • Ensure that all lessons are covered by an appropriate member of the teaching staff, and if necessary, depending on staff levels and student numbers, teach or help arrange cover teaching when required.
  • Maintain accurate records of the hours worked by teachers and pass this information to the Centre Manager/Academic Manager on a weekly basis
  • Ensure that teachers are aware of activity programmes and use any excursion preparation material available before students go on excursions.
  • Assist DOS or Academic Manager in working out a profitable timetabling for the centre maximizing the number of students in line with British Council regulations and Language in Action standards.
  • Play an active role in Student Leaving Ceremonies and ensure all students have a leaving certificate of achievement before they leave.
  • Take part in social activities and events and motivate the Academic team to participate in activities, excursions and as well as LiA events.
  • Manage teaching materials, office supplies and resources. Ensure that teachers have access to materials and technology required for their lessons.
  • When required, the Senior Teacher will deputise for the DoS when the DoS is absent. In the case where there is a centre without a DoS, the Senior Teacher will assume greater responsibility with the support of the Academic Manager as the acting DoS of that centre.

Safeguarding and General duties and responsibilities

  • Act in a professional and appropriate manner with all LiA/Malvern International’s agents, clients, students, activity leaders, host campus staff, and other LiA staff
  • Undergo online Safeguarding Training (Level 1) and online training for Prevent before the commencement of employment.
  • Read, be fully conversant with, and act in accordance with the staff handbook, company policies, relevant Child Protection documents and all risk assessments prior to the start of the period of employment.
  • Ensure that the company’s health and safety guidelines are followed on and around campus
  • Take part in social activities and events and motivate the Academic team to participate in activities, excursions and as well as LiA events.
  • Ensure that teachers and students adhere to the code of conduct laid down by the company and report any incidents of misbehavior to the appropriate member of staff.
  • Be involved in any activity necessary for the smooth running of the centre and to improve students’ experience.
  • Attend Fire drills on school premises and supervise students according to DoS guidelines.
  • Be a positive and professional role model for the students, representative of the core values of Language in Action
  • Supervise students during lessons and during breaks, and anytime it’s necessary.
  • Work in accordance with safeguarding policy and apply it to all activities.
  • Check all students are present in class and report to DoS any absence, according to absence procedure.
  • Liaise with DoS daily to report any issue with students.

Qualifications

· A University degree

· Cambridge CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL or equivalent TEFL qualification

Statutory Requirements

· Undergo an Enhanced DBS disclosure check or overseas equivalent

· Eligibility to work in UK (the applicant must either have a UK Passport/Work Permit/Work VISA)

Experience and knowledge

· Native or near native level of English

· At least 2 years EFL Teaching experience

· ICT skills, e.g. production of reports, correspondence, inputting / updating information

· Operate relevant equipment / ICT packages (e.g. Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Outlook, IWBs and Smartboards)

· Demonstrable knowledge of effective language teaching and learning strategies

Desirable:

  • Experience of Academic Management
  • Summer school experience
  • Experience of working with teenagers
  • Dip TESOL/DELTA or equivalent

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Professional attitude to teaching; excellent teaching skills; willingness to take part in the activities programme as an integral part of the students’ experience; energetic, motivated and personable; excellent communicator; strong awareness of cross-cultural considerations; a professional approach to problem solving; diplomacy and tact; enjoys working with young learners. Ability to work under pressure and in a stressful environment; able to follow and implement standardized LiA company policies

Hours of Work

Working hours will vary from centre to centre according to student numbers, frequency of intakes and staffing structures but a typical working week will be 40 contract hours, 5 days per week. Weekend/late evening work may be required.

Salary and benefits

Weekly salary: £525-£550 (gross rate) depending on the centre and location.

Holiday pay: paid at end of contract and accrued in accordance with UK laws and regulations

Room and Board: Full board accommodation including single room, breakfast and dinner may be offered with no offset fee for the Senior Teacher position. In the case where the centre does not have a DoS, living on campus is obligatory.
