Job description
We are seeking an experienced professional engineer/scientist with a proven track record in the modelling and implementation of high speed optical fiber transmission systems and networks, who will be responsible for modelling, characterizing and optimising high speed data transmission over Microsoft’s CoreSmartTM Hollow-core fiber products and the application of the technology in Microsoft’s networks and datacenters.
Responsibilities
You must have a good understanding of the fundamental properties of optical fibers and a detailed knowledge of how these impact system design and performance. You will have to demonstrate the ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary engineering team and be capable of motivating and inspiring others.
Key responspibilities for the role include:
- Contributing to both internal and external R&D/engineering projects aimed at improving Microsoft’s product lines in the optical systems domain
- Developing, implementing and applying theoretical models/numerical tools as needed to reliably predict and optimise the performance of hollow core fiber transmission systems and networks
- Understanding the systems aspects and trade-offs associated with differing transceivers, transmission data rates, modulation formats, amplification requirements, ROADM, channel monitoring and software control etc. Supporting all stages of systems development from lab prototype, system testing and qualification through to field trials
- Optimisation and support for the deployment of Microsoft’s CoreSmartTM Hollowcore Fiber (HCF) technology in DWDM optical transmission systems for various network topologies – in particular link designs, associated power and OSNR budgets etc.
- Liaising with glass fiber design and cable teams, development and qualification functions to ensure link design and performance is optimised for the intended application
- Supporting collaborative programmes with suppliers on technology development
- Ensuring compliance with international and industry/sector specific regulatory requirements and coordination of internal/external product compliance testing
- Actively ensuring the establishment and maintenance of a safe work environment
Qualifications
- Proven experience in telecoms systems engineering, ideally gained within a leading Networking Equipment Manufacturer, cloud services provider, or Telecommunications Carrier
- Strong technical knowledge of fiber optic transmission systems, OTN, Coherent/non coherent transmission systems, telecoms networks and network management
- Sound understanding of theoretical aspects relating to optical data transmission over single mode fibers and novel fibers and their implementation and use for simulation purposes
- Knowledge of link design for deployment across data center, metro and long-haul applications
- In-depth understanding and experience of optical fiber system setup and characterization
- Prior experience with coding in languages such as Python and MATLAB
- Be able to apply state-of-the-art methods to complex problems
- Have proven success in working internationally with dispersed technical teams, customers and resources.
- Ability to analyze new technology trends and standards
- BSc or higher degree (preferably PhD) in Optical Science / Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Physics from a recognized academic institution
