Senior Clinical Fellow in Renal Transplant surgery Hampstead, England

Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals
Full Time Hampstead, England 33790 - 53132 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join a team of seven consultant transplant surgeons, one higher surgical trainee, four senior clinical fellows, an academic fellow, a core surgical trainee and an FY1. We perform over 120 kidney transplants per year for the end-stage renal population of the North Central London sector. A major component of the job will be multi-organ retrieval (liver, pancreas, small bowel, kidney) with the National Organ Retrieval Service. A number of consultants have interests in other areas, for example urology (laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy, ureteric reconstruction, general urology), sarcoma surgery, paediatric vascular surgery, general surgery and specialist dialysis access surgery.

In the second 3 months you will be expected to contribute to a joint on-call rota with higher urology trainees to cover our emergency service and will take turns with other trainees to attend operating lists, clinics and ward rounds. The renal surgery department is closely integrated with the transplant nephrology team, with whom we have an excellent relationship. Ward rounds are conducted jointly, providing a fantastic learning environment for the interested trainee. Furthermore, we have opportunities for both short and long term research, including leading to a higher degree thanks to our links with UCL and the newly built Pears institute of transplant and immunology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will work closely with the consultant surgeons, other middle grades, junior doctors and Nurse Practitioners in the care of recent and established renal transplant and in the care of other renal patients undergoing surgical procedures. There is an excellent working relationship between surgeons and physicians.

The surgical team provides live and deceased renal transplantation, all aspects of dialysis access, and urological surgery for patients with renal failure, as well as contributing to multi-organ retrieval surgery as part of the National Organ Retrieval Service. In addition, there may be opportunities for exposure to aspects of vascular surgery such as complex access surgery, vascular sarcoma and paediatric vascular surgery. The post also includes responsibility for the supervision and training of the junior staff and teaching medical students.

The on-call rota provides cover for both renal transplant surgery as well as the urology department on a 1 in 10 basis. The on-call commitments will therefore incorporate emergency transplant activity and care of the renal failure population as well as covering urological emergencies and out of hours urological care for patients. No previous experience of urology is required as close support is given by the urology consultant staff. This rota will be EWTD and New Deal compliant.

The trainees/fellows alternate onto a separate multi-organ retrieval rota, usually in an assistant role. This will be the main theme of the post for the first 3 months.

There are excellent research facilities and the successful candidate will be expected to be involved in research and, if appropriate, experimental research within the department in the field of renal transplantation.

Support with career progression will be given.
