Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.
This position ensures that visitors have a safe and positive experience at the New Mexico Museum of Art; protects Museum facilities and collection; acts as custodial staff on a daily basis; and serves as back up cashier when needed.
How does it get done?
Ensure all exhibits are secure and not at risk of damage, vandalism, or theft. Assist with the general custodial upkeep of museum facilities and grounds. Monitor surveillance cameras, guard, and patrol premises. Create and track daily security logs and files. Respond promptly to emergency situations and complete all necessary documentation. Act as backup cashier when needed.
Who are the customers?
Visitors of all ages, background, and abilities; school groups; and museum staff.
Ideal Candidate
Experience working in security and customer service, is comfortable with monetary transactions, can perform basic/minor maintenance and janitorial duties, experience with managing crowd control during busy school/special events, ability to complete accident/incident reports. High school education preferred.
Minimum Qualification
Eighth grade education.
Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Sitting, standing, bending, and reaching are all required. Continuous two-way radio use. Work during inclement weather and perform assigned duties, including snow removal. Requires overtime for special events and other activities within the Museum. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours are scheduled, and availability for emergencies is required. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
