Job description

Looking for a Scum Master to manage the of development scrums and delivery of SSTL's Flight Software products for integration into new mission and to support existing missions.


Reporting to the Head of Software, you will be response for the management of development scrums and delivery of SSTL's Flight Software products for integration into new mission solutions and providing support and enhancement to existing mission services.

You will lead an experienced software development team, currently transitioning to an Agile-SCRUM development approach, working on multiple embedded products coded in C and deployed on VxWorks, Linux, and bare-metal solutions. You will make a real contribute to SSTL's forthcoming pathfinder missions in Lunar communications relay, ESA earth science, commercial infrared and SAR earth observation, and international space agency collaboration & training missions

  • Lead, motivate and grow the software development team, ensuring wellbeing, performance and ongoing career development of skills and experience, providing coaching, mentoring, and feedback, and championing a one-team approach across engineering disciplines
  • Identification and implementation of continuous improvement in software development performance and quality
  • Manage all aspects of development on a day-to-day basis
  • Run Agile ceremonies (stand ups, retrospective, backlog grooming, among others)
  • Working with developers and product owners, articulate effective feature, epic and story descriptions, definition of done and acceptance criteria
  • Manage Sprint planning and track progress across development streams
  • Oversee & report on progress with delivery metrics (velocity, cycle time, burndown etc.)
  • Work alongside Project Management to determine priorities, forecasts, plans, resources, risks, status, and escalation.
  • Work with the Head of Software to manage resource allocation in line with project priorities.
  • Manage identified risks and mitigation plans for development

  • Strong teamwork and collaborative decision-making skills. A positive, good humoured and proactive approach at all times, with the ability to build consensus and influence
  • Experience in software development methodologies, Agile based Scrum and Kanban delivery. Preferably certified in Agile delivery methodologies.
  • Experience of documenting requirements in JIRA, from the high-level Key features (Epics) breaking them down into manageable user stories with agreed Acceptance Criteria is essential.
  • Excellent communication verbal and written, being able to operate at all levels. A strong communicator who promotes facilitation and collaboration
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent time management, efficiency, and organisational skills.
  • Software development background, desirably embedded.
  • BSc in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related degree with 5+ years of experience in software development and delivery
  • Knowledge of JIRA, Git, BitBucket,
  • Able to demonstrate company mindsets and behaviours; Be accountable, Drive & delivery, communicate effectively, Self-manage effectively, Work as one team.
