Company Overview:
The Newton technology department delivers change within Product teams. Product teams can vary in size and have a Scrum Master assigned to them. Change initiatives range in size from large projects to smaller pieces of work,
We currently have a team of between 6 to 8 Scrum Masters, who are allocated work based on priorities, experience and skills. Scrum Masters work very closely with our business staff, with our Business Analysts, Project Managers, with our other projects and technology staff, and with the wider BNY Mellon technology and vendor staff.
The role of a Senior Scum Master at Newton is to lead and serve scrum teams as well as prove themselves an advocate and coach of agile processes. Scrum Masters will also work closely with our Project Managers and may actively manage small projects themselves. The Scrum Master may oversee one or many Scrum/Product teams at any one time. Occasionally, Scrum Masters will also run small scale projects. The size and quantity of scrum teams and projects assigned to the Scrum Master will be determined by a number of factors, including number of years’ experience in the role.

Key Responsibilities
- Scrum Masters are responsible for establishing and maintaining scrum accountabilities, events and artifacts for the Newton Product teams, utilizing best practices.
- Enable high performing agile teams
- Scrum Masters are leaders who serve and steer the Product teams that are both technology and business related, using Newton and BNYM appropriate standards and processes.
- Manage other, both technology and business related, projects and work items as directed by Newton management
- Uphold the process, while protecting the team from over-committing or complacency
- Coach scrum teams in self-organization
- Remove impediments and coach the scrum team on removing impediments themselves
- Resolve conflicts and issues preventing the scrum team from delivering increments of work meeting the DoD (Definition of Done)
- Provide consultancy to projects and business departments in matters relating to Agile best practice, process, procedures and management of the PBIs (Product Backlog Item) and resources (where appropriate).
- Actively partner with:
- Business and technology Product Owners
- Other Scrum Masters to agree a shared understanding of the Scrum Framework and a set of common best practices all teams should aim to achieve, and participate in a Scrum Master Guild;
- Project Managers in the company to help develop project processes and procedures, and participate in appropriate forums to help address this responsibility
- Provide regular reporting to Product stakeholders and management, automating wherever possible.
- Administration of JIRA Scrum Board and Releases of staff allocated to products and initiatives.
- Travelling as required to other sites from time to time, as demands dictate.
- Seek to explore and coach outside of the scrum team, helping others on their agile journey:
- Coach teams on agile philosophy
- Integrate related frameworks and tools within the company
- Develop a common understanding and requirements for the agile process
- Provide training to staff to improve their knowledge, capabilities, through direct communication as well as participation in training efforts, course specification, training delivery and so on.
- Help teams navigate agile tools and software
- Encourage employee and stakeholder buy-in
- Emphasis on process/management coaching: focus on establishing leadership for agile teams – business as well as technology - and overseeing successful adoption of agile
- Comply with all BNY Mellon corporate policies and procedures, including HR policies and procedures, applicable to BNY Mellon
- Alert management including the Chief Risk Officer and / or the EMEA Chief Risk Officer immediately of any significant changes to business risks and internal control effectiveness.
- Notify management and/or the Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer and Head of International Compliance immediately on discovery of any material regulatory breach.
Comply with all Security and Health & Safety policies and procedures operating within the business.
Financial (if appropriate)
- Manage any delegated budget in a manner that will best serve Newton’s best interests.
- Provide the Finance Department with monthly tracking and projection information.
TCF, Regulatory and Compliance Responsibilities
Be aware, maintain knowledge and adhere to the relevant regulatory and legal obligation of the function managed, including local and wider group policies. This should include an understanding, and the appropriate application, of the FSA requirements, the Six Consumer Outcomes and Newton’s TCF commitments. Report any suspected breaches to the Compliance or Legal departments, as appropriate immediately on discovery.
Risk Management
Monitor, document and report business risks and internal controls of the function managed, alerting Senior Management immediately of any significant changes.
Experience and qualifications required:

- Exceptional Scrum Master skills with relevant, demonstrable experience of delivery via scrum and agile
- Experience of leading and serving scrum teams in the investment management industry is beneficial

- Work with the business and technology teams throughout the delivery life cycle, attending and facilitating the appropriate Scrum Events and other meetings; coach the scrum team on facilitating certain events themselves
