Job Description

Art Technician

Post Title : Art Technician

Responsible To : Head of Art

Hours : 18 hours per week over 5 days

Grade : 4 (£21,575 FTE). £11.18 per hour pro rata for 18 hours per week, 39 weeks of the year.

Main Purpose : Under the instruction/guidance of senior staff provide general support in the art department, including preparation, and maintenance of resources and support to staff and students. Take ownership and control of stock.

Principal Accountabilities

Support for students

  • Using specialist skills, training and experience, support students in practical learning activities under the guidance of the teacher.
  • Prepare materials to students specifications.

Support for the Teacher

  • Create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and productive working environment which is also healthy and safe, and to report all health and safety concerns to the appropriate person in accordance with school policy.
  • The timely and accurate design, preparation and use of specialist equipment, resources and materials as required by staff and the curriculum, eg preparing photography equipment and materials.
  • Maintain records relevant to art.
  • Preparing relevant art materials.
  • Assisting with clay and glaze preparation
  • Managing the kiln.
  • Undertake any clerical and admin tasks relevant to the curriculum.

Support for the Curriculum

  • Monitor and manage stock and supplies for art, cataloguing as required.
  • Maintenance of specialist technical equipment, check for quality, and safety, undertaking repairs and modifications and reporting other damage in accordance with school policy.
  • Demonstrate and assist others in safe and effective use of specialist equipment and materials.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of health and safety requirements, including attending courses as required.
  • Order materials under the direction of senior staff.

  • Be aware and comply with policies and procedures relating to data protection, child protection, health and safety, copyright, security and confidentiality reporting all concerns to an appropriate person in accordance with school policies.
  • Be aware of and support difference and endeavour to ensure all students have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos of, work and aims of the school.
  • Appreciate and support the role of other professionals.
  • Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required.
  • Participate in training and other learning opportunities and in performance management as required.
  • Support other departments by arrangement as required.

Design Technology Technician

Post Title : Design Technology Technician

Responsible To : Head of Design Technology

Hours : 30hrs per week, 40 weeks per year (38 term time, 1 during school closure, 1 INSET).

Grade : 4 (£21,575 FTE). £11.18 per hour pro rata for 16 hours per week

Main Purpose : Under the instruction/guidance of the Head of Department, provide general support in the Design Technology department, including preparation and maintenance of resources, and support to staff and students.

Principal Accountabilities

Support for students

  • Using specialist skills, training and experience, support students in practical learning activities under the guidance of the teacher.
  • Preparation of resources for students’ lessons/specification.

Support for the Teacher

  • Preparing materials and setting up equipment for lessons.
  • Support lessons with supervision, practical instruction and demonstrations as and when required.
  • Routine maintenance and adjustment of machines and equipment including sharpening of hand tools.
  • Ensure that equipment and working areas are kept in clean and tidy order, specifically after lessons.
  • Routine maintenance and setting up of CAD/CAM equipment.
  • Routine maintenance of LEV systems to ensure they run efficiently, e.g. check and empty extraction systems on a regular basis.
  • Organise any external repair and maintenance of equipment so that it is maintained and kept in good working order.
  • Administrative tasks e.g. filing, photocopying and laminating.

Support for the Curriculum

  • In liaison with the curriculum leader, ensure accurate electronic stock keeping and ordering of departmental materials and equipment.
  • Producing Teaching aids and updating displays and visual materials around the department.
  • Supporting the head of department to ensure H&S compliance and the keeping of accurate records e.g. Equipment checks, Risk Assessment, COSHH and LEV audits.
  • Support catch-up sessions and clubs during lunch or after school.
