Job description

Sanctions Advisory
Bournemouth

As a Barclays Sanctions Advisory, you will play a key role within the wider Group structure of Sanctions, providing subject matter expertise to all key stakeholders with regards to on-going compliance with the Group Sanctions Policy. This is an exciting opportunity to build solid partnerships with the business, assisting first line of defence operational areas in ensuring compliance with Sanctions Policy and promoting a culture of risk control across the business and Financial Crime.

Barclays is one of the world's largest and most respected financial institutions, with 329 years of success, quality and innovation behind us. We offer careers that provide endless opportunity – helping millions of individuals and businesses thrive, and creating financial and digital solutions that the world now takes for granted.

At Barclays, we offer a hybrid working experience that blends the positives of working alongside colleagues at our onsite locations, together with working from home. We have a structured approach where colleagues work at an onsite location on fixed, ‘anchor’, days of the week, for a minimum of two days a week or more, as set by the business area (or nearest equivalent if working part-time hours). Please discuss the working pattern requirements for the role you are applying for with the hiring manager. Please note that as we continue to embed our hybrid working environment, we remain in a test and learn phase, which means that working arrangements may be subject to change on reasonable notice to ensure we meet the needs of our business.

What will you be doing?
  • Acting as an advisor to the aligned business for sanctions issues or tasks, providing expert advice and guidance to relevant stakeholders
  • Providing up-to-date interpretation of sanctions legislation and regulation ensuring Barclays meets its legal and regulatory accountabilities
  • Ensuring the timely completion of voluntary disclosures to UK, US, etc. regulators by the business where necessary
  • Managing the preparation of exceptions, dispensations, and waivers against Sanctions Policy, by way of collaboration with the business, after case-by-case analysis of the circumstances
  • Ensuring that sanctions matters are correctly managed and follow appropriate escalation routes, while involving the relevant stakeholders early and fully
  • Working with the business in the implementation of Group and local policy standards and controls
  • Providing recommendations on how Financial Crime Controls can be developed by the 1st Line of Defence
  • Assisting where appropriate with responses to requests from internal audit and assurance teams

What we’re looking for:
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills
  • Sound judgement, excellent attention to detail and the ability and confidence to make business critical decisions
  • Ability to interact at all levels of the organization, including distilling complex issues to clear and concise briefings for senior management
  • Comprehension of materiality of issues and their potential reputational and regulatory impact, with a solid grasp of when to escalate and to what level

Skills that will help you in the role:
  • Resilient, persuasive manner, with exceptional negotiation and influencing skills, ability to multi-task and problem solving
  • Excellent knowledge of OFAC, HMT, EU, and UN sanctions laws, regulations, regulatory expectations and industry best practice
  • A background in sanctions or Financial Crime
  • A solid grasp of the Barclays Group/Business Units and its major customer/payments processing systems

Where will you be working?
The Bournemouth Wealth Office is located between Bournemouth and Poole with Sandbanks beach no more than 500 metres from the front door. We have a significant number of restaurants and sports clubs locally which make this a great office to work in. We work very closely with our BUK colleagues and share the growing Barclays Eagle Lab on site. This creates significant interest across the region and provides an opportunity for the teams to get together regularly.
