Position: Route Specialist

Reporting to: Head of Operations and Standards
Post Deputy: Ground Staff and Operations Standards Inspector
Main Purpose of the Role
To develop and maintain the standards for train driving acquisition and retention of route knowledge. To ensure Colas Rail has up to date and fit for purpose route risk assessments and maintain and update route videos captured by forward facing camera footage.
Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Responsible for the development of route packs to include route risk assessments, cab passes, up to date route maps and current route videos.
  • Develop process with planning team to reduce reliance on external route conductor provision and identify associated cost savings.
  • Develop, review and revise route risk assessments.
  • Development of route learning methods which enables the use of more diverse opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities for the external provision of route conductors for third parties.
  • Support the Operations and Standards Team on train driving operations and policy issues with the ORR, RSSB and other external bodies.
  • Ensure Cab access agreements (contracts) with TOC/FOCs are renewed in a timely manner to ensure the continuity in service of cab passes and manage the utilization of all cab passes to ensure that they are delivering maximum benefit to the business.
  • Manage all aspects of route learning, route refreshing and driver/operator training and assessments with all driver Trainer Assessors, ROMS and Freight Managers sharing resources where possible.
  • Attend where appropriate internal planning meetings with the Regional Operations Managers for Freight and Plant to identify Operational/Conductor resource shortfalls which will enable targeted Training/Route learning to be managed.
  • The above does not limit your duties and the Company may require you from time to time to undertake any work within your capabilities and capacity.
Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Essential
  • Extensive and relevant experience in railway operations with expert knowledge and understanding of train driving operations policies, principles and standards.
  • Expert understanding and application of risk assessment and risk management tools and techniques
  • Proven work ethics within a fast-paced environment
  • Be able to liaise with all levels of management within Colas Rail
  • Possess a structured methodical approach to problem solving
  • Demonstrate the ability to work as an individual or as part of a team
  • Have a positive outlook on the requirement for continuous change to accommodate the current business needs
  • Have an enquiring and inquisitive and being prepared to challenge and think outside of the recognised cultural norm on procedures and practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, influencing and communication skills
Desirable
  • Approved by the ORR as a Trainer and Assessor in train driving (TDLC)
  • Current train driver and holder of European Train Driving Licence
  • Current training qualification such as NVQ, C&G, PTTLLS or equivalent
  • Internal Verification Qualification, D34, V1 or equivalent
