Our route is focused on delivering for the West Midlands area and our mainline from Birmingham Snow Hill to London Marylebone. Central Route covers the intensely operated West Midlands area, to the pastoral scenes of rural Worcestershire, Herefordshire and the Chiltern area.

Our Route Control manages one of the busiest networks in the country with a focus on delivering high-performing train service for our passenger operators Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Trains, West Midlands Trains, Cross Country and Transport for Wales. Our freight customers operate some of the most important traffic flows from Felixstowe to Birmingham and the Northwest and increasing aggregate traffic for HS2 construction.

Our Route Control, based at the West Midlands Signalling Centre, covers all this area and as part of Central Route you will be at the heart of delivering for one of Network Rail’s busiest and most important areas. Brief Description


Based at the West Midlands Signalling Centre, Duddeston in Birmingham this is an exciting opportunity to join one of Network Rail’s newest Route Controls. You will be part of a team of Controllers through a shift and deliver the highest quality railway possible. The Route Control Manager role oversees the safety of Central Route’s network whilst also delivering the highest possible standards and techniques in incident management to minimise delay and put our passengers first.

You will be leading a team of Train Running Controllers, Incident Controllers and Incident Support Controllers on a shift basis working a pattern of day and night shifts (12 hour shifts). You will have the responsibility to ensure that each incident is managed professionally and according to our Standard Operating Practises. Good communication skills with our network colleagues is essential as is the ability to lead, challenge and direct your team and work collaboratively with senior managers of other functions. You will also have line management responsibilities for a small team of Controllers reporting directly to you.

Central Route Control are looking for Route Control Managers with the ability to drive the highest possible standards in delivering safety and performance. Prior experience of working within an Operations environment would be desirable but not essential. We are looking to add a diversity of experience and knowledge to our team and welcome applications from all backgrounds.

Please note, the successful candidate will require National Security Vetting before starting in role


About the role (External)


Key Accountabilities

1. Lead the safe delivery of the daily train plan both during normal running and disruptive events and in the management of Very Short-Term Planning activity.
2. In the event of a major incident or severe disruption to the service, act as Gold Command to provide strategic direction to control and other response personnel and set up and manage the major incident room.
3. Lead the management of safety of the line incidents in accordance with safety standards and statutory requirements.
4. Lead the control team dissemination of safety critical and other information and introduce and maintain a system of recording operational safety and performance incident information in accordance with the relevant company standards, procedures and statutory requirements, to provide safety, performance and management reporting information at the required frequencies.
5. Manage the development and application of appropriate contingency plans in times of disruption, to minimise delays and cancellations to customers.
6. Lead incident reviews giving appropriate consideration to customer needs, Network Rail and train operators positions and establish a system to monitor and review the implementation of recommendations and the effect on future performance.
7. Lead the development of process integration within the control environment, to develop more effective approaches to management of the train plan, incidents and provision of customer information.
8. Contribute to development and maintenance of up to date operational and safety policies and procedures, relating to train service delivery, control of operations and control personnel.
9. Manage the integrity of sensitive operational and security documentation.


In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:

  • Experience of leading teams within a control, logistics or operations environment
  • Experience of strategic decision-making
  • Good negotiating skills and ability to make objective decisions
  • Able to manage conflict, influence others and work under pressure
  • Knowledge of Network Rail and Train Operating Companies within the Route and the key aspects of their business
  • Knowledge of Train Operator performance regime and targets
  • Understanding of operational rules and regulations
  • Good geographical knowledge of applicable Route


We would also like but it isn’t crucial to have/to be:

  • Previous experience of working within a safety critical communications environment
  • Geographical knowledge of adjoining Routes
  • Previous experience of working within a maintenance discipline

Network Rail adheres to a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the pay range advertised.


Salary: Starting at £53,202 and increasing to £59,853 plus operational allowance
