We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated, Pharmacy Technician to join our busy, friendly pharmacy team at Royal Berkshire Hospital. The role will be to assist the department in the provision of a high quality pharmacy service to our patients. This exciting rotational post will give you an opportunity to work in the pharmacy dispensary, pharmacy stores and on the wards.

To work as part of the Pharmacy team to provide an effective pharmacy service in the Pharmacy Dispensary, Pharmacy Stores and at Ward Level contributing to the efficient provision of Medicines Optimisation within RBFT as part of a multidisciplinary team

To work, as an Accredited Checking Technician, Medicine Management Technician, completing Clinical Checks and Counselling patients with their medicines

Managerial and Technical
1. To assist the dispensary and stores manager (and their deputies) to deliver a safe and efficient pharmacy service.
2. To undertake line management of junior staff within the dispensary and pharmacy stores, ensuring management of staff sickness, absence and performance in line with Trust policies and guidance from HR Advisors so that issues are dealt with fairly, appropriately and consistently
3. To assist in the development of new systems of work as required by service developments and legal changes
4. To participate in the recruitment and selection of Pharmacy staff.
5. To be a role model for other staff and actively promote the role of the Pharmacy Technician.
6. To recommend and advise on the storage conditions required for all pharmaceutical and hazardous substances stored in the pharmacy stores area and all other areas overseen by pharmacy staff.
7. To assist in developing and reviewing relevant Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and how to guides to ensure Health and Safety and legal aspects are of a high standard within both areas.
8. To advise clinical staff within their ward/department on pharmaceutical issues relating to Health and Safety, COSHH policies, environmental issues and Trust Policies regarding matters such as non-formulary and unlicensed medicines.

1. To ensure that compliance with legal, ethical and other applicable standards is achieved in the provision of Pharmacy services, including adherence to the M.E.P guide.
2. To dispense in-patient, one-stop and discharge medication requests including stock supplies and distribution of drugs to wards and peripheral hospitals as per standard operating procedures.
3. To dispense ward stock and TTO (to take out) controlled drugs, ensuring that prescriptions and orders conform to the Misuse of Drugs Act.
4. To utilise the prescription tracking system with respect to dispensary prescriptions, to ensure accurate reporting of key performance indicators.
5. To be the Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) and complete final accuracy checking slots within the dispensary if needed.
6. To dispense and assist in the organisation of Clinical Trials.
7. To assemble emergency drug boxes and recall boxes as required.
8. To provide a technician top-up service to specialised wards including Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Units.
9. To share the responsibility for replenishment of stock, good stock control, and stock rotation ensuring that medicines are fit for use before being issued.
10. To take part in expiry date checks of medicines and assist in the return of medicines.
11. To assist in the organisation of pre-planned work for clinics inside and external to the Trust.
12. To review the returned patient specific medicines and ensure staff are following current guidelines for waste disposal and medicine re-use
13. To supervise pharmacy porters to ensure an efficient and safe delivery service
14. To monitor the Emergency and Controlled Drug cupboards. Ensuring stock and orders are placed, specimen signatures are updated, monthly stock takes are done and ward requisitions are completed within turnaround times and escalate any discrepancies.
15. To ensure adequate levels of pharmaceutical stock is kept to ensure minimal wastage and good stock rotation is achieved
16. To identify potential problems regarding the lack of availability of medicines for individual prescriptions, seeking advice from the pharmacist on suitable alternatives or agreed delivery timetable.
17. To be responsible for role modelling, encouraging, recording, reporting and monitoring of internal errors within the dispensary.
1. To supervise the day to day running of distribution by managing assistants and ensuring the availability of appropriate levels of staff at all times and break times are monitored
2. To provide a ward top up service of stock medicines if required and work with the ward manager, pharmacist and pharmacy stores team to support stock list review as required
3. To ensure adequate pharmaceutical stock levels are maintained for the wards and departments and that the stock control service delivers an effective and efficient operation that minimises pharmaceutical wastage and ensures products are in good condition
4. To review and update ward computerised ward stock profiles

5. To liaise with ward managers, nursing leads, clinical pharmacy teams and stock controllers to ensure that ward stock profiles are fit for purpose and meet the service needs
6. To print off and investigate and resolve daily stock checks to confirm accuracy of stock balances and report discrepancies to the pharmacy purchasing and distribution manager
7. To supervise the retention of all documentation with regard to checking, picking, issuing and receipt of goods in line with current guidelines
8. To review and return any medicines suitable for re-use following current guidelines and dispose of any waste materials
9. To monitor temperatures in the Bulk Store and Medical Gas Store and record stock levels as required
10. To monitor the stock line email account in conjunction with other members of staff
1. To perform accurate assessment of Patient’s Own Drugs, assessing appropriateness and suitability for use during admission as service provision dictates.
2. To undertake accurate medication histories in clinical ward environments via collation of various information sources as per relevant Trust SOPs and policies; including liaison with patients, internal and external healthcare colleagues (GPs, Community Pharmacies etc.) when required.
3. To identify and refer clinical pharmaceutical issues to respective ward Pharmacist(s).
4. To contribute to efficient, cost effective and evidence based use of medicines to proactively manage unnecessary drug wastage and unsafe practice to maintain patient safety.
5. To support compliance to Trust prescribing formulary, identifying and relaying non-formulary and unlicensed medicines use to Pharmacist(s) where appropriate.
6. To demonstrate proactive antimicrobial stewardship, working vigilantly in accordance with Trust microbiology prescribing guidelines, identifying and relaying antibiotic courses for review where appropriate.
7. To undertake regular reviews of ward storage areas, removing surplus stock and any labelled patient’s medicines, expired fridge items.
8. To sort returned and waste medicines for crediting and returning to stock, disposal or use in another area to prevent wastage.
9. To demonstrate prioritisation of Patient’s Pharmaceutical needs in clinical areas against departmental guidelines for High risk medicines and High Risk patients.
10. To actively support patient counselling and safe usage of medicines - promotion of compliance (information on Medicines – PILs, specialist patient groups, translation and interpretation services, sensory impairment, signposting to community services to improve transfer of care and contribute to Medicines Optimisation.
11. To undertake ordering of clinically screened medications for in-patient use and preparation of patients for discharge.
12. To participate in Trust wide medicines management initiatives and performance benchmarking as required by the Clinical Services Manager.

Teaching, training and Research
1. To actively support, supervise and assess (when appropriate) training on Medicines Management processes for:
a. Pharmacy Technicians
b. Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians
c. Foundation Trainee Pharmacists
d. Pharmacy Assistants
e. Undergraduate Pharmacy Students/work experience candidates on placement
f. Nursing staff (if appropriate)
2. To assist with induction of new staff as per Trust policy.
3. To be responsible for undertaking work, study days, reading, presentations etc. as a means of personal development, especially towards organisational needs of the post.
4. To participate in performance review in accordance with Trust HR policies.
5. To regularly self-assess own development against professional lead body practice frameworks to benchmark personal progression.
6. To participate in the planning and development of Personal Development Plans.
7. To ensure Health and Safety Regulations are observed and adhered to at all time.
8. To comply with NHS Trust/Pharmacy policies, procedures and Guide to Good Dispensing Practice for medicinal products.
9. To participate in audit and research projects when required in collaboration with other healthcare colleagues, educational institutions and national initiatives.
