Kingfisher ward is a general paediatric ward caring for children and young people from 0–17 years with a variety of medical, surgical and psychological problems. There is a Paediatric assessment area managing admissions and promoting early discharge. There are 3 higher
observation beds to support children requiring higher level care within the main ward.
General paediatrics provide 24 hour care to all patients. The Emergency Department is a 24/7 facility providing urgent and emergency care for
children and adults with a range of presenting complaints including medical, surgical, psychological, and trauma. Clinical areas include Minors, Majors & Resus.
We are offering an opportunity for a Band 5 RSCN’s to join our service for a unique opportunity in in undertaking a 1 year robust rotation programme between our Paediatric Ward - Kingfisher and our Emergency Department, spending 6 months in each area. At the end of the rotation, post holder will be permanently employed in their host area of either Kingfisher Ward or the Emergency Department but will have the flexibility to work across both areas caring for children and young people.
Emergency Department This is a busy working environment with a high turnover of patients which sees and treats children and adults with a range of conditions including minor injuries, major trauma, medical and surgical emergency’s and mental health conditions.
The Emergency Department is undergoing significant improvements to create a new department which will have a dedicated Paediatric area.
Kingfisher Ward
- Inpatient Ward - General Paediatric ward, taking babies, children and young people aged 0-17 years with a wide variety of medical, surgical and emotional health conditions.
- Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) incorporated providing early support to ensure children can be managed at home and avoid unnecessary admissions.
- Higher Observation Bay (HOB) providing acute care for patients with higher level nursing requirement.
- Paediatric Day Surgery Unit managing elective surgery from a wide variety of specialties including ENT, Dental, Max Fax and General Surgery.

If you are an experienced Children’s Nurse, committed to providing high quality care for children and their families, and would like to work in a busy district general hospital setting as part of two friendly teams, we would like to hear from you.
- To be part of the nursing team on Kingfisher Ward / Emergency Department, working shift patterns to include weekends and nights to ensure the ward is safely staffed. In addition as required to be part of a wider flexible workforce across the Trust for departments providing paediatric care.
- To assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of children/ young people and their families ensuring high quality efficient care is consistently achieved.
- To provide high standards of evidence based patient centred care.
- To provide excellent communication and customer care skills.
- To contribute to a learning environment, providing advice and support to students and other staff.
- To work as part of the team to maintain and contribute the efficient running of the department, if required to deputise in the absence of more senior staff
- To work with the team to provide a child friendly service that is responsive, flexible and striving to deliver excellence. This includes reviewing standards and engaging families to ensure their voice is heard.
- To work with the team building positive relationships and contributing to the team and department goals providing child centred care.
- To contribute to the cleanliness and to ensure the general clinical environment is fit for purpose and child friendly.
- Work within codes of practice and professional guidelines, following Trust policies and maintaining personal competency levels.
