Job description

Due to internal promotion an exciting opening has arisen for a highly motivated radiographer to join our team in Neuroradiology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. It’s a great opportunity to build on skills already gained whilst working in all modalities in a specialist hospital. We are proud of the service we provide to patients and would expect the successful candidate to have a patient centred approach with the ability to communicate effectively. You will be working in a truly multidisciplinary team with undergraduates, trainee radiologists, surgeons and junior radiographers so good teaching skills are essential.

The department offers interventional, 3T and 1.5T MRI, CT, angiography and plain film. We are in the middle of an equipment replacement program and have recently installed a dual energy CT and are in the process of replacing 2 MRI scanners and 2 angio rooms with top of the range equipment. In addition, we will be installing a 5th MRI scanner in the coming months.

The department has a comprehensive CT, MRI and angio training program to support radiographers who wish to develop their skills in these modalities. The department offers support for CPD and all staff are actively supported in this area

Participation in an extended working day, weekend and out of hours service is essential.

The Neuroradiology Department offers a service to Neurology, Neurosurgery and Stroke.

  • The successful applicant will be a keen team player who has image quality, patient care and safety high on their agenda with a flexible approach to working hours.
  • They will be responsible for the organisation of workload in all modalities on a rotational basis, providing on-going tuition and mentoring for junior staff.
  • The post holder will liaise with the other modalities to ensure that room utilisation is maximised, prioritising patients to ensure optimum efficiency and service quality ensuring all data inputs on PACS and EPIC are accurately recorded in order to maintain integrity of data for both patients and the service
  • The post holder will be required to ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors to the Neuroradiology Department
  • They will ensure a high standard of patient care and participate in the monitoring of standards
  • The successful candidate will be expected to participate in departmental and divisional activities such as Health and Safety, Audit, Research, Clinical Governance and investigation of adverse incidents and complaints
  • Patients will present with a full range of complex conditions and the post holder will be responsible for carrying out the appropriate diagnostic procedures to support the diagnosis of complex conditions
The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) is part of the UCLH NHS Foundation Trust which has a reputation for innovation and providing excellent patient-focused care. NHNN is centrally located within easy reach of the many amenities that London has to offer, catering for a wide and diverse population.

The Trust is one of the designated Hyper-Acute Stroke Units in London and imaging forms an integral part of the patient pathway. The HASU is based at NHNN with an Emergency Stroke Unit accepting patients direct from the community. The Neuroradiology Department has a comprehensive range of state of the art equipment, including 4 MRI scanners (including an intervention MRI suite), 2 CT scanners, 2 Interventional Suites and digital X-ray room, all fully integrated with PACS

  • To produce high quality images adapting technique when required to suit the needs of the patient, keeping radiation dose as low as reasonably practicable.
  • To undertake comprehensive assessment and appropriate examination of patients including those with diverse/complex/multi pathological presentation. This may necessitate the use of advanced investigative and analytical skills to assess and evaluate different imaging options to obtain the best outcome for the patient.
  • To liaise with referrers when clarification regarding selection of the most clinically appropriate imaging examination is required.
  • To work in accordance with the IRR (17)/IR(ME)R 2017 legislation and the Local Rules for Radiation Protection and MRI safety
  • To perform IV cannulation once trained
  • To work effectively to provide the optimum level of service, with an unpredictable workload.
  • To fully assess images produced following examination and ensure that any necessary additional imaging is undertaken within a single patient attendance where possible.
  • To expedite the reporting of images where an abnormality that would affect patient management has been detected
  • To work, without supervision, taking legal responsibility and accountability for all aspects of work.
  • To always use equipment in the correct manner and report faults appropriately, removing from use if required
  • To participate in clinical audit and the appraisal process
