Reserve Fire Crew

Pay - £17.27 per hour during deployment (£11.51 per hour during training), plus £500 retainer per 6 months once trained

Location – Winsford during training, and then various across Cheshire

Hours – no guaranteed hours, but when required to work shifts will be up to 12 hours per deployment (including nights and weekends)

As a member of the Reserve Fire Crew you would join our Operational Resilience Team (ORT) on a fixed term contract. You would be called upon to help us to keep our communities safe during ‘spate conditions’, such as this summer’s heatwave, and periods when staff numbers are significantly reduced, for example during a future pandemic or industrial action. ORT members will provide flexible operational cover and will be required to work during days, nights and weekends, at any location, sometimes at short notice.

This will help us ensure we can continue to meet our legal obligations under the Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004 and Civil Contingencies Act 2004, to provide sufficient emergency cover for the communities we serve.

You will receive essential training in advance of being deployed and at emergency incidents Reserve Fire Crew would always be supervised by experienced officers.

Duties

The duties of the Reserve Fire Crew will include:

- attendance at emergency incidents including fires and road traffic collisions

- climbing ladders, using fire hoses, dealing with casualties, using/moving equipment, and possibly wearing breathing apparatus when entering hot and smoke-filled buildings

- undertaking tasks within their level of capability, as instructed by the Incident Commander or experienced officers

- attending training in the above areas and learning new skills quickly

Essential Requirements

To apply you must be:

- 18 years old

- physically fit enough to meet the required fitness standard and pass a medical

- calm under pressure and resilient enough to work in emotionally challenging settings

- able to take in information, follow instructions and learn new skills

- confident with working at heights, in confined spaces and with manual equipment

- eligible to work in the UK and pass a basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

- willing to embrace the Service’s Core Values

- available to attend two to three weeks’ paid training and committed to attending ongoing refresher training.

Desirable Requirements

- previous firefighting or emergency services experience

- previous experience of safety critical work.

3) Interview – you will be required to attend a face-to-face interview to discuss your suitability for the role

4) Practical tests – you will be required to pass the national firefighter selection tests including working with ladders, upper body strength, physical stamina

5) Pre-employment checks – you will be required to

- undergo a basic DBS check

- provide proof of your identity and eligibility to work in the UK

- provide two satisfactory references

- pass a medical with our Occupational Health Unit, including a satisfactory

drugs and alcohol test
