Within ISD, this post is in Faculty IT & Partnering which provides local specialist applications and systems support and IT strategic business partnering for users in the School of Life and Medical Sciences (SLMS), in the Institute of Education (IOE), the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment and to departments in the Faculties of Arts & Humanities, Social & Historical Sciences and Laws (SLASH).
About the role
We are looking to recruit a Research Systems Administrator to manage the geography department’s research technology infrastructure, and to be dynamic and creative in taking the department/faculty research computing capabilities forward. Although your work will focus on the use of data and computers in support of research and research-led teaching, you will work closely with colleagues in the department who support administrative IT systems and will have a leadership role within the departmental IT community.
As a Research Technology System Administrator, you will work as part of a small team based within the Social and Historical Sciences faculty, within the Faculty IT and Partnering Department in ISD. There will be a strong matrix reporting line into the Department Computing Committee who are a part of the communities and cultures of ISD, ARC, and the Department.
- You will help to deliver the services and systems which make data and compute-intensive research possible, support the discovery and innovation of tools, practices and systems in this field.
- This role is both research, contributing to the scholarly life of the university, and a professional service role, managing and delivering shared capabilities and following professional best practice.
The position requires several focuses including but not exclusive to the following:
- Provide specialist knowledge, support and subject matter expertise.
- Engagement with researchers to provide specialist advice and consultative services.
- Leadership, handling of sensitive data, governance and system/infrastructure security.
- Design and deliver bespoke or specialist technology solutions for the faculty.

About you
As a Research System Administrator, you have working knowledge and experience of High-Performance Computing (HPC), Operating systems and their maintenance, directory & authentication technologies, and TCP/IP networking, including familiarity with common Internet protocols (e.g. HTTP, SMTP, LDAP, SFTP/SSH, etc.) and associated client software. Additionally you are likely to hold an Undergraduate degree in a subject with a computational, quantitative, or data intensive component or alternatively be able to demonstrate a subsequent formal qualification or professional experience in a similar field.
