Job description
We are looking to appoint a Research Technician for a project in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology research cluster in the School of Biosciences. Our group is interested in speciation in facultatively sexual species, and this project will use experimental evolution to study divergent adaptation and the evolution of reproductive isolation in populations of rotifers in which the frequency of sex is manipulated. The project is funded by the Royal Society and led by Dr. Isobel Eyres.
Duties will include preparation of stock reagents, monitoring and restocking consumables and overseeing the day to day running of the rotifer lab, along with more specialised activity to support the research. This will include, for example, assisting with development of culture methodology, feeding and maintaining rotifer stocks and experimental cultures, assisting with short and long-term experimental evolution assays, making stock solutions, culture medium preparation, and the washing and sterilization of glass/plasticware.
Applicants must have a Technical Apprenticeship or a degree in a relevant biological discipline (or equivalent experience). Previous technical experience in an aquatic laboratory, experience of recording and checking numerical data, and knowledge, understanding and experience of good laboratory practice are also essential.
