About the Role:
We are looking for a talented individual to join our research team working on a BBSRC funded grant “Disease susceptibility and gut health in the wild: Determining interactions between diet, gut microbiome and immunity”. The central question of our research is ‘how does diet supplementation alter the microbiome composition, immune response, and outcome of infections in a wild population of Mus musculus.
Main responsibilities include analysis of immunological and parasitological samples in the laboratory; organizing and conducting fieldwork involving small mammal live-trapping; day to day running of the lab; maintaining field equipment and collating field and laboratory data; undertaking Home Office training for small animal handling; working with laboratory mice including germ-free mice.
About You:
Essential skills include experience in either laboratory or field-based research projects (ideally both) and a basic knowledge in immunology, parasitology and/or ecology. Experience working with rodents in the laboratory/field and in immunological and/or parasitological techniques is desirable.
The three-year, full-time post will be undertaken in the lab of Professor Kathryn Else at the Lydia Becker Institute of Immunology and Inflammation within the School of Biological Sciences, as part of a joint grant between the Universities of Manchester and Edinburgh (Co-Investigator Professor Amy Pedersen). The position involves a minimum of six field trips, as part of a team, to the Isle of May during the course of the grant, each of 4-5 weeks duration.
