Job description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled individual to take the lead in the oversight and management of a number of busy research laboratories. This position, based in the Bessemer building of the South Kensington Campus, will support our global leading research groups within the Synthetic Biology area of the department, this includes the Ellis, Ledesma, Nakayama, Stanley, Stan and Ouldridge research groups.
The successful candidate will be required to take the lead on the provision of an effective and efficient technical service for staff and students within these multi-user Synthetic Biology laboratories. This role will involve the operation and maintenance of research apparatus, equipment and instruments, day to day supervision of a laboratory apprentice and assisting with research projects, health and safety support, and general laboratory management, including waste management, to ensure their efficient running in a manner consistent with good laboratory practice and technique.
Duties and responsibilities
Embedded within the research groups as one of the team, you will be overseeing the general housekeeping, routine operation, and maintenance of a number of research laboratories. This will include providing laboratory inductions, equipment management / maintenance, training of new and existing research staff and students on relevant techniques and equipment, preparation of general stocks, ordering and stocking of general consumables, coordination and management of waste (including GM and chemical) and health and safety support. There will be the opportunity to expand your knowledge within this exciting research area.
Essential requirements
You have excellent communication skills, thrive in a team environment and should have a desire to provide high quality technical support for research purposes.
You should have a minimum of a degree in a relevant Bioscience subject, or an equivalent laboratory apprenticeship, vocational qualifications and/or relevant experience in a technical or scientific role. You must have experience of working in a research laboratory environment, in the biosciences (including microbiological experience), and with chemical and biological reagents and material (ideally including GM). You will also have an enthusiasm for scientific research, good organisation and troubleshooting skills,
Due to the nature of a technical role, some flexible working hours are required at times e.g. early starts / late finishes, as required. You should also demonstrate organisational and administrative skills, be efficient and adaptable and used to working in a busy dynamic laboratory environment. The ability to work well as part of a team, prioritise effectively and work to meet deadlines is essential.
To note that there will be an element of manual handling and the successful candidate must be physically capable of this: The regular movement of equipment and consumables and as needed the use of lifting aids for deliveries and other heavier loads. PPE and training would be provided before any such work is started.
