Part-time, fixed-term contract for three years. (FTE. 0.5) 18.25 hours per week.

We are seeking a fixed-term, part-time research software engineer to support the teaching and research activities of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies (CIM). You will be joining a small, but growing, RSE team in a research software development capacity.

CIM is a research centre dedicated to expanding the role of interdisciplinary methods through new lines of inquiry that cut across disciplinary boundaries, through research and research-led teaching. We have three Masters degrees: MA in Digital Media and Culture, MSc in Big Data and Digital Futures, and MASc in Data Visualisation, and a PhD in interdisciplinary Studies.

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

To provide software-related and technical support to the research and teaching activities of the Centre through liaison with academic staff and central University colleagues, and to maintain the technical infrastructure required to deliver this support.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

User Engagement & Support

  • Designing and contributing to the delivery of training workshops to postgraduate students and academics from a variety of interdisciplinary backgrounds. To include training in the use of R and Python applied to diverse topics such as: web and app development (including working with web platform APIs and scraping data); data visualisation; and data science - machine learning and generative AI, statistics and ‘computing’.

  • Collaborating with academics to design and create research software and scripts addressing specific project and general research needs (i.e., methods, data, models) in a readable, reliable, and reproducible fashion.

  • Promoting open research practices in both teaching and research.

  • Provision of support for the Centre’s social media accounts.

  • Liaise between the academic community in CM and central computing and technical services to enhance teaching and research practices through the use of technology.

  • Provide ad hoc support/advice to staff researchers and postgraduate students on research software practices and technical literature, with guidance from Senior RSE is required.


Technical

  • Supporting and encouraging the sustainable use of digital tools, data sets, data analytics, visualisation and innovative digital methods throughout the Centre.

  • Documenting infrastructure, protocols, and guides in the RSE Team Knowledge Base.

  • Provision of technical support to the Centre as required, including maintaining software and hardware/other equipment and associated inventories.


Financial & Resource Management

  • Identify and quote for hardware for use in research projects, with reference to budgetary constraints, mentored by a senior RSE.

  • Attend and contribute to RSE team and research project meetings.
