Research Scientist, Phenotypic Screening - Functional Genomics

Science Park, Cambridge, UK

Competitive Salary & Benefits

AstraZeneca is a science-led, global biopharmaceutical company, committed to improving the health and lives of people across the globe through our research and development platform and a growing late-stage pipeline. With a presence in over 100 countries, we have strength in emerging markets, and our medicines are used by millions of patients and clinicians worldwide.

Working here means being results-oriented and working together to make the impossible a reality!

Within Discovery Scientists we are growing our capabilities in Functional Genomics (FGX), a group responsible for the identification and validation of novel targets to support AstraZeneca’s clinical pipeline. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Research Scientist to join our expanding team within FGX, to help support the identification and validation of novel targets and grow AstraZeneca’s clinical pipeline.

What’ll you do?

This role is perfect for an early career professional looking to start their journey in pharmaceutical research, or a more experience individual seeking a fresh challenge. What you’ll need is a passion for drug discovery and a desire to be challenged and learn.

We are seeking an exceptional Research Scientist in the Phenotypic Screening team where we are focussed on the discovery and validation of novel drug targets. Following the acquisition of Alexion, we are looking to apply our discovery capabilities in the rare disease space, meaning this is a great opportunity to be part of something new.

This is a laboratory-based role, where you will work closely with other members of the team to build arrayed cell-based assays and screening workflows using the latest technology such as CRISPR. Whatever your level of experience you’ll have every opportunity to acquire the practical and academic skills needed to put you on a path to becoming a true expert in the field.

Essential skills and experience

  • Masters’ degree / MPhil (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific discipline or equivalent industry experience
  • Demonstrable ability to solve scientific problems and troubleshoot technical issues
  • A strong background in cell biology – experience working with primary/complex models of disease, ideally coupled to the use of CRISPR to interrogate gene function
  • This highly collaborative role calls for outstanding communication and team working skills, with a desire to learn

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience in plate-based assay development and or/cellular screening technologies
  • Experience in the rare disease field
