Why this role is important for CPI’s work

CPI has an exciting opportunity for a Research Scientist to join the established and growing Materials Science team, within the National Formulation Centre based at NETPark, in Sedgefield. The team of high-performing scientists play a key role in delivering across a wide range of exciting technical projects, including battery materials, sustainable polymers, electronic materials, as well as numerous other areas.

We are looking for an individual with experience in coating functional materials who enjoys working in a dynamic and collaborative environment on diverse projects in different sectors. You will use your experience and interest in Materials Science to support senior colleagues in the delivery of innovation projects in key areas including battery materials and sustainable materials, particularly looking at functional coatings and materials. You will be part of a team that generates innovative solutions to problem-solving and will work in a dynamic and fast-moving environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Keeping up to date with developments in areas relevant to materials science, and/or legislative and SHEQ-related changes as communicated by senior colleagues, ensuring understanding of these and any associated new best practices, methods, or techniques.
  • Presenting and formally reporting experimental conclusions and supporting data for internal peer review and submission to clients, to agreed timescales and standards.
  • Setting up, planning, and executing experimental / pilot scale runs and analysing, interpreting, and reporting the results of these within agreed timescales and quality standards, and in accordance with project/client requirements.
  • Being responsible for providing clearly documented records of technical data, decisions, methodologies, calculations, and software used in an agreed format.
  • Actively engaging in hazard studies / SRA studies and discussions, as appropriate to role level.

The person we are seeking

In order to be successful in this role it is essential that you:

  • Can demonstrate a foundation of technical knowledge and some underpinning knowledge in Materials Science, particularly in functional coatings, as well as evidence of technical problem-solving.
  • Can demonstrate professional knowledge of principles and practices in Materials Science, as well as experience of practical, technical-based work gained in academic or industrial environments.
  • Have the ability to apply limited theoretical and practical scientific/engineering methods to contribute to business activities.
  • Are educated to a minimum of HNC or Foundation degree (or equivalent) level in a Scientific or Engineering discipline – ideally Materials Science, Chemistry or a Physical Sciences or related field, with relevant industrial experience. It is desirable that candidates are educated to a degree level (or equivalent) in one of these subjects.
  • Demonstrate skills and experience in solving technical challenges and leveraging input from senior colleagues.
  • Are committed to your own personal development and will actively seek opportunities to develop yourself within this exciting role.

It is also desirable for you to have:

  • Relevant experience/knowledge of pertinent Materials Science techniques (e.g., SEM, AFM, rheometry, spectroscopy, mechanical testing).
  • Knowledge of the application of relevant materials techniques for formulation and materials testing.
