Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Scientist who will specialise in gamma spectroscopy to join our Nuclear Metrology Group.

The Nuclear Metrology Group is a world leader in developing techniques for the measurement of radioactivity, including gamma spectroscopy. We support a wide range of industrial and research customers within the medical and energy sectors by providing measurement services and research into measurement methods.

This is a hands-on role based in our Teddington laboratories. You’ll support senior scientists by building and using your expertise in gamma spectroscopy. Your work will involve:

  • Lead areas of research to develop and utilise our gamma spectroscopy capability in the fields of nuclear medicine and energy
  • Develop and use software for data analysis and modelling relating to gamma spectroscopy measurements
  • Setup, use, maintain and troubleshoot gamma spectroscopy related equipment
  • Develop risk assessed procedures, laboratory methods and experimental plans to delivery gamma spectroscopy measurement results in collaboration with our customers
  • Help to manage laboratory activities and provide training for users of gamma spectroscopy capability
  • Prepare internal and external reports, journal publications, posters and talks to communicate results

While some hybrid working may be possible, the majority of the time this role will require work on site.


Prior experience of gamma spectroscopy is not required but experience in taking data, analysing and interpreting as well as some experience in computer coding is essential. A successful candidate will have a proactive organised approach to work, good problem-solving skills.

We’re seeking a candidate with the following capabilities:

  • Ability to develop software for analysis or simulation of experimental data
  • A logical approach to developing techniques and procedures
  • Good organisation skills to ensure best use of available lab time and on time delivery for customer work
  • An understanding of the need for excellent quality and the ability to work within a quality system
  • The ability to design and lead all elements of an experimental campaign
  • Comfortable carrying out tasks in a laboratory environment that includes chemicals and radioactive materials (full health and safety training and appropriate supervision will be given)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills; able to interpret data and decide on next steps
  • Ability to work as part of a diverse, interdisciplinary team and to agree outcomes
  • Broad understanding of measurement of radioactivity

Required Qualifications

  • BSc or equivalent in a physics or engineering related discipline
  • GCSEs Level 9 (A*) to Level 4 (C) or equivalent in Maths and English

Any of the following additional capabilities would also be of interest, but candidates without any of this experience are still encouraged to apply as full training will be given:

  • Monte Carlo Simulation
  • Experience with a programming language similar to python or C
  • Familiarity with equipment calibration and error analysis
  • Experience of working to a UKAS accredited quality system
  • Experience of radiation measurement techniques and research in this area

This is a permanent, full-time role based in Teddington.
